Abstract: Methods and systems for processing touch inputs are disclosed. The invention in one respect includes reading data from a multipoint sensing device such as a multipoint touch screen where the data pertains to touch input with respect to the multipoint sensing device, and identifying at least one multipoint gesture based on the data from the multipoint sensing device.

The one or more heuristics comprise: a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a one- dimensional vertical screen scrolling command, a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a two-dimensional screen translation command, and a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a command to transition from displaying a respective item in a set of items to displaying a next item in the set of items.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a multi-functional hand-held device capable of configuring user inputs based on how the device is to be used. Preferably, the multifunctional hand-held device has at most only a few physical buttons, keys, or switches so that its display size can be substantially increased. The multifunctional hand-held device also incorporates a variety of input mechanisms, including touch sensitive screens, touch sensitive housings, display actuators, audio input, etc. The device also incorporates a user-configurable GUI for each of the multiple functions of the devices.

Abstract: A system and method compensates for drift in electronic touch screens. A plurality of touch areas and drift areas are defined for a touch screen. From location coordinates generated by the screen, a ratio between detected touch hits in each defined touch area and detected touch hits in each corresponding drift area is computed. The computed ratio is compared to a calibration threshold to determine whether the number of touch hits in the drift area are excessive. If they are, a correction vector for all or a portion of the screen may be computed and used to adjust subsequent location coordinates or a calibration signal may be generated. The calibration signal may be a data message transmitted to a remote site to indicate a service call is required at the site of the touch screen and computer. Preferably, the system includes a location adjustor that determines whether the adjustment vectors for a plurality of keypad areas have a corresponding direction and magnitude. If they do, the location adjustor adjusts the definition of the touch and drift areas in the keypad memory.

Abstract: A method of encoding alphabetic characters and inputting electrical signals defining those characters to a computer includes the use of a keyboard having five individual alpha input keys, one alpha input key being operatively associated with an operator's thumb and the remaining keys each being dedicated for operation by one finger of the operator's hand. The keys are actuable either individually or in chord combinations for encoding the alphabetic characters and inputting electrical signals to the computer. Each of the alpha input keys are designated to represent one of the five vowels. Therefore, when these keys are actuated individually they generate electrical signals corresponding to the vowels. The consonants of the alphabet are designated to correspond to chord combinations of key actuations. Unique electrical signals are generated in response to the actuation of one or more of the alpha keys to selectively input the electrical signals defining the alphabetic characters to the computer.

Abstract: A resistive or capacitive position touchscreen includes a glass substrate having a uniform resistive coating and series resistive chains of overlapping discrete electrodes adjacent to the peripheral edges of the substrate. Gaps in an otherwise insulating linear discontinuity running parallel to each chain form resistive current paths across the touch area. There are at leat two gaps for each electrode so that multiple current paths connect to each electrode. Each gap produces a local ripple in the voltage field which decays away with distance from the gap. Since the ripple decay length is determined by the distance between current paths, the magnitude of the ripple near the electrodes is reduced exponentially by a factor corresponding to the number of gaps per electrode.

Abstract: This automatic wafer alignment technique may be used in a step-and-repeat photomicrolithographic exposure system accurately to prealign a wafer before exposure to the B-level and subsequent reticles, and automatically to align the wafer at each die site prior to exposure. A search technique optimizes location of the global targets used for wafer prealignment. The search begins at the most likely target position and proceeds through a search area established by the maximum expected rough prealignment error. A wafer alignment target configuration consisting of a cross with one elongated arm and a short crossbar is used to optimize target verification. To locate targets a video image is digitized and the average intensity at each video scan line and column is obtained and stored. This data is used to determine the presence in the video image of feature edges. A table of all such edges is established. These listed edges are correlated to determine all pairs of edges that may represent potential targets. From these, the best target is selected by comparing certain weighted parameters of each potential target.
