TL;DR: In this paper, a computer-implemented method for use in conjunction with a computing device with a touch screen display comprises: detecting one or more finger contacts with the touch screen, applying one or several heuristics to the finger contacts to determine a command for the device, and processing the command.
Abstract: A computer-implemented method for use in conjunction with a computing device with a touch screen display comprises: detecting one or more finger contacts with the touch screen display, applying one or more heuristics to the one or more finger contacts to determine a command for the device, and processing the command. The one or more heuristics comprise: a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a one- dimensional vertical screen scrolling command, a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a two-dimensional screen translation command, and a heuristic for determining that the one or more finger contacts correspond to a command to transition from displaying a respective item in a set of items to displaying a next item in the set of items.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors propose a method for executing an application program in a backdrop mode that makes the application program non-removable from the display screen and intercepts, using substitute subroutines external to the program, selected data destined for the application.
Abstract: A method, in a digital computer having a display screen, for executing an application program in a backdrop mode that makes the application program non-removable from the display screen. The method includes the steps of designating the application program for execution in the backdrop mode and executing the application program. Further, the method includes the step of intercepting, using substitute subroutines external to the application program, selected data destined for the application program. The interception advantageously prevents the application program from responding to the selected data in a manner normally expected of the application program if the application program executes in a non-backdrop mode. The selected data that is intercepted includes data for causing the application program to quit execution. Further, the method also includes the step of disabling a close option in the display screen to prevent a user of the digital computer from issuing a command to quit execution of the application program while the application program executes in the backdrop mode. In this manner, the method permits codes in the application program to remain substantially unchanged irrespective of whether the application program executes in the non-backdrop mode or in the backdrop mode.

TL;DR: In this paper, a jog dial related application declares to a jog-dial state monitor program 54 C that it (application) itself is a jogging-dial related application and then adds the application software to a list of the jog-doll related applications.
Abstract: An information processing method and apparatus free from a defect in a conventional system that complicated processing operations need to be executed before a user selects a desired application program on a task bar equipped with a start menu button and starts the selected program. A jog dial related application declares to a jog dial state monitor program 54 C that it (application) itself is a jog dial related application. The jog dial state monitor program 54 C then adds the application software to a list of the jog dial related applications. The display of the jog dial menu is then set to a display proper to the application and apprised to the user in the form of a jog dial guide. The jog dial related application advises the illustration of the jog dial operation in the current state to the jog dial state monitor program 54 C in the form of a letter string.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for developing attractions in a shooting game system with which players can experience gun fights between the targets and players themselves is presented, which can be easily installed in a short period anywhere and game quality can be adjusted in the most suitable state.
Abstract: In a method for developing attractions in a shooting game system with which players can experience gun fights between the targets and players themselves. The shooting game system can be easily installed in a short period anywhere and game quality can be adjusted in the most suitable state. The method for developing attractions includes the steps of producing various types of targets by combining fundamental mechanisms, each of which is used for a unit operation; incorporating unified control equipment and peripherals in the produced target to make them a target unit; embedding the above-described target unit in a target unit case so as to serve also as an indoor partition and posts; and arranging the embedded target units in the designated rooms of the attraction hall. The method for developing attractions alternatively includes inputting information regarding the arrangement of the targets, displaying the arrangement on a screen, and the interaction between the targets and the players. This method thereby allows monitor and control of game quality.

TL;DR: In this paper, a feature server processes calls to a subscriber's main directory number in a packet network by submitting a subscriber-administered questionnaire to callers, when completed by the calling party, can be used to automatically route the call or to reposition the call in the incoming call queue.
Abstract: A feature server, e.g., a stored program controller, processes calls to a subscriber's main directory number in a packet network by submitting a subscriber-administered questionnaire to callers. The information in the questionnaire, when completed by the calling party, can be used to automatically route the call or to reposition the call in the incoming call queue. Alternatively, the completed, or even partially completed questionnaire may be displayed in a “pop up” window to a subscriber's operator who can then use the information to assist the caller or, without need of answering the call, to reposition the call within the queue or to divert the call to another directory number. In addition, information previously provided in a questionnaire completed by a caller is stored so that when the caller calls again, the stored information may be employed to more efficiently process the call.
