TL;DR: It is shown that graphite oxide sheets can be converted by infrared laser irradiation into porous graphene sheets that are flexible, robust, and highly conductive, and hold promise for high-power, flexible electronics.
Abstract: Although electrochemical capacitors (ECs), also known as supercapacitors or ultracapacitors, charge and discharge faster than batteries, they are still limited by low energy densities and slow rate capabilities. We used a standard LightScribe DVD optical drive to do the direct laser reduction of graphite oxide films to graphene. The produced films are mechanically robust, show high electrical conductivity (1738 siemens per meter) and specific surface area (1520 square meters per gram), and can thus be used directly as EC electrodes without the need for binders or current collectors, as is the case for conventional ECs. Devices made with these electrodes exhibit ultrahigh energy density values in different electrolytes while maintaining the high power density and excellent cycle stability of ECs. Moreover, these ECs maintain excellent electrochemical attributes under high mechanical stress and thus hold promise for high-power, flexible electronics.

TL;DR: Several challenges remain in developing ASSSs, such as to: i) explore high-performance electrode materials, ii) enhance the interfacial compatibility between electrode and solid-state electrolyte, and iii) simplify the device fabrication process.
Abstract: carbide-derived carbon, [ 12 ] carbon nanotubes (CNTs), [ 14–17 ] and graphene, [ 6 , 7 , 10 , 18 , 19 ] possess notable features including high surface area, high electrical conductivity, and good chemical stability, and therefore they have been widely explored as thinfi lm electrode materials for ASSSs. However, the fabrication of ASSSs generally involves complex solution processing, highpressure pressing, high-temperature sintering, and sputtering techniques. [ 11 , 12 , 14–17 ] Moreover, polymer binders and conductive additives are required to enhance the adhesion between electrode materials and substrates as well as to improve the conductivity of the electrode, which unavoidably leads to decreased energy density of the devices. [ 6 , 20 ] Therefore, several challenges remain in developing ASSSs, such as to: i) explore high-performance electrode materials, ii) enhance the interfacial compatibility between electrode and solid-state electrolyte, and iii) simplify the device fabrication process. Graphene aerogels (GAs) represent a new class of ultralight and porous carbon materials that are associated with high

TL;DR: The described electrochemical exfoliation of graphene sheets into aqueous solutions of different inorganic salts shows great promise for the industrial-scale synthesis of high-quality graphene for numerous advanced applications.
Abstract: Mass production of high-quality graphene sheets is essential for their practical application in electronics, optoelectronics, composite materials, and energy-storage devices. Here we report a prompt electrochemical exfoliation of graphene sheets into aqueous solutions of different inorganic salts ((NH4)2SO4, Na2SO4, K2SO4, etc.). Exfoliation in these electrolytes leads to graphene with a high yield (>85%, ≤3 layers), large lateral size (up to 44 μm), low oxidation degree (a C/O ratio of 17.2), and a remarkable hole mobility of 310 cm2 V–1 s–1. Further, highly conductive graphene films (11 Ω sq–1) are readily fabricated on an A4-size paper by applying brush painting of a concentrated graphene ink (10 mg mL–1, in N,N′-dimethylformamide). All-solid-state flexible supercapacitors manufactured on the basis of such graphene films deliver a high area capacitance of 11.3 mF cm–2 and an excellent rate capability of 5000 mV s–1. The described electrochemical exfoliation shows great promise for the industrial-scale ...

TL;DR: Graphene oxide paper is reported, a free-standing carbon-based membrane material made by flow-directed assembly of individual graphene oxide sheets that outperforms many other paper-like materials in stiffness and strength.
Abstract: Free-standing paper-like or foil-like materials are an integral part of our technological society. Their uses include protective layers, chemical filters, components of electrical batteries or supercapacitors, adhesive layers, electronic or optoelectronic components, and molecular storage. Inorganic 'paper-like' materials based on nanoscale components such as exfoliated vermiculite or mica platelets have been intensively studied and commercialized as protective coatings, high-temperature binders, dielectric barriers and gas-impermeable membranes. Carbon-based flexible graphite foils composed of stacked platelets of expanded graphite have long been used in packing and gasketing applications because of their chemical resistivity against most media, superior sealability over a wide temperature range, and impermeability to fluids. The discovery of carbon nanotubes brought about bucky paper, which displays excellent mechanical and electrical properties that make it potentially suitable for fuel cell and structural composite applications. Here we report the preparation and characterization of graphene oxide paper, a free-standing carbon-based membrane material made by flow-directed assembly of individual graphene oxide sheets. This new material outperforms many other paper-like materials in stiffness and strength. Its combination of macroscopic flexibility and stiffness is a result of a unique interlocking-tile arrangement of the nanoscale graphene oxide sheets.

TL;DR: The status of graphene research is presented, which includes aspects related to synthesis, characterization, structure, and properties.
Abstract: Every few years, a new material with unique properties emerges and fascinates the scientific community, typical recent examples being high-temperature superconductors and carbon nanotubes. Graphene is the latest sensation with unusual properties, such as half-integer quantum Hall effect and ballistic electron transport. This two-dimensional material which is the parent of all graphitic carbon forms is strictly expected to comprise a single layer, but there is considerable interest in investigating two-layer and few-layer graphenes as well. Synthesis and characterization of graphenes pose challenges, but there has been considerable progress in the last year or so. Herein, we present the status of graphene research which includes aspects related to synthesis, characterization, structure, and properties.
