TL;DR: This article reviews factors working against or in favor of the transportability of manual-based child treatments from research clinics to service practitioners and uses work with anxiety-disordered youths as an example of a potentially transportable manual- based treatment.
Abstract: This article reviews factors working against or in favor of the transportability of manual-based child treatments from research clinics to service practitioners. The review examines client factors, service-clinic therapist factors, and researcher factors that may contribute to the reported gap between research and practice outcomes. As requested for this special section, this article uses work with anxiety-disordered youths as an example of a potentially transportable manual-based treatment. Issues and future directions are discussed.

TL;DR: Results showed that low trait anxious subjects had consistently larger arousal and anxiety responses to stress than did highs and that prior exposure to certain same-modality neutral stimuli reduced responses to subsequent stressors.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explored the underlying structure of group therapy participants' perceptions of helpful therapeutic impacts through principal-components analysis and identified helpful therapeutic impact dimensions were related to perceptions of group leader behavior and to ratings of group climate.
Abstract: The underlying structure of group therapy participants' perceptions of helpful therapeutic impacts were explored through principal-components analysis. Critical incidents obtained from 210 interpersonal growth group and 74 group counseling participants were rated on a measure that incorporated items from the Therapeutic Factors (S. Bloch, J. Reibstein, E. Crouch, P. Holroyd, & J. Themen, 1979), and Categories of Good Moments (A. R. Mahrer & W. P. Nadler, 1986) rating systems and R. Elliott's (1985) taxonomy of helpful impacts. Principal-components analysis revealed four underlying factors that accounted for 59.2% of the variance. These factors were labeled Emotional Awareness-Insight, Relationship-Climate, Other Versus Self Focus, and Problem Solving-Behavior Change. The identified helpful therapeutic impact dimensions were related to perceptions of group leader behavior and to ratings of group climate.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the context of child and adolescent treatment and treatment research, summarize findings of that research, and offer a constructive critique, and suggest a number of issues that need to be addressed, and approaches that should be taken, to advance the field.
Abstract: After decades of sowing, weeding, harvesting, and winnowing, workers in the field of child and adolescent treatment research have produced a bumper crop. There are now scores of structured interventions for diverse forms of psychological dysfunction across a broad age spectrum. Research-based treatments exist for a substantial range of clinically significant problems and disorders. Although a majority of the more than 230 named therapies for youths have not been tested empirically (see Kazdin, 1988; Kazdin & Weisz, 1996), dozens of such therapies have been subjected to empirical scrutiny, with beneficial effects demonstrated in more than 300 studies. In this chapter, we describe the context of child and adolescent treatment and treatment research, summarize findings of that research, and offer a constructive critique. Finally, we suggest a number of issues that need to be addressed, and approaches that need to be taken, to advance the field. Throughout this chapter, we use the term children to encompass both children and adolescents, except where a distinction needs to be drawn between the two age groups.
