TL;DR: The authors provide a brief overview of the history of contemporary sex therapy and discuss some assumptions underlying common therapeutic approaches, including etiological factors behind sexual dysfunction, the unit of intervention (individual versus couple), and the nature of actual treatment.
Abstract: It has been approximately three decades since the advent of contemporary sex therapy. What is the current state of theory underlying the practice of sex therapy? In attempting to answer that question, I provide a brief overview of the history of contemporary sex therapy and discuss some assumptions underlying common therapeutic approaches. These assumptions are considered with regard to three interrelated dimensions: etiological factors behind sexual dysfunction, the unit of intervention (individual versus couple), and the nature of the actual treatment. Afterward I provide a critical overview of the general state of research on sex therapy, note current, problematic trends in the field, and offer some global suggestions for remediation.

Abstract: The methodological superiority of the RCT stems from itscapacity to preclude several forms of bias: by randomizingpatients to treatments, groups are made statistically equivalentat baseline, at least in theory, such that observed differences atthe end of the trial can be attributed with more confidence to theintervention instead of group differences. By blinding patients, doctors, evaluators, and biometricians, bias stemming fromexpectations and knowledge is precluded, as well as the possibili-ty of fraud or subconscious preference on the part of raters, nurs-es, or statisticians. Therefore RCTs, if possible double blind, seem to be the most rigorous methodological standard availablefor evaluating complementary and alternative medicine(CAM).
