Abstract: There is, I think, something ethereal about i —the square root of minus one. I remember first hearing about it at school. It seemed an odd beast at that time—an intruder hovering on the edge of reality. Usually familiarity dulls this sense of the bizarre, but in the case of i it was the reverse: over the years the sense of its surreal nature intensified. It seemed that it was impossible to write mathematics that described the real world in …

TL;DR: This review summarizes the recent advances in the synthesis of 2D MOF nanosheets by using top-down methods, e.g. sonication exfoliation, mechanical ex foliation, Li-intercalation exfoliated and chemical exfolation, and bottom-up methods, i.e. interfacial synthesis, three-layer synthesis, surfactant-assisted synthesis, modulated synthesis, and sonication synthesis.
Abstract: Two-dimensional (2D) metal–organic framework (MOF) nanosheets are attracting increasing research attention due to their unique properties originating from their ultrathin thickness, large surface area and high surface-to-volume atom ratios. Many great advances have been made in the synthesis and application of 2D MOF nanosheets over the past few years. In this review, we summarize the recent advances in the synthesis of 2D MOF nanosheets by using top-down methods, e.g. sonication exfoliation, mechanical exfoliation, Li-intercalation exfoliation and chemical exfoliation, and bottom-up methods, i.e. interfacial synthesis, three-layer synthesis, surfactant-assisted synthesis, modulated synthesis, and sonication synthesis. In addition, the recent progress in 2D MOF nanosheet-based nanocomposites is also briefly introduced. The potential applications of 2D MOF nanosheets in gas separation, energy conversion and storage, catalysis, sensors and biomedicine are discussed. Finally, we give our personal insights into the challenges and opportunities for the future research of 2D MOF nanosheets and their composites.

TL;DR: Nanomaterials have emerged as an amazing class of materials that consists of a broad spectrum of examples with at least one dimension in the range of 1 to 100 nm as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Nanomaterials have emerged as an amazing class of materials that consists of a broad spectrum of examples with at least one dimension in the range of 1 to 100 nm. Exceptionally high surface areas can be achieved through the rational design of nanomaterials. Nanomaterials can be produced with outstanding magnetic, electrical, optical, mechanical, and catalytic properties that are substantially different from their bulk counterparts. The nanomaterial properties can be tuned as desired via precisely controlling the size, shape, synthesis conditions, and appropriate functionalization. This review discusses a brief history of nanomaterials and their use throughout history to trigger advances in nanotechnology development. In particular, we describe and define various terms relating to nanomaterials. Various nanomaterial synthesis methods, including top-down and bottom-up approaches, are discussed. The unique features of nanomaterials are highlighted throughout the review. This review describes advances in nanomaterials, specifically fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, graphene, carbon quantum dots, nanodiamonds, carbon nanohorns, nanoporous materials, core–shell nanoparticles, silicene, antimonene, MXenes, 2D MOF nanosheets, boron nitride nanosheets, layered double hydroxides, and metal-based nanomaterials. Finally, we conclude by discussing challenges and future perspectives relating to nanomaterials.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide an overview of different aspects of 2D MOF layered architectures such as topology, interpenetration, structural transformations, properties, and applications.
Abstract: Among the recent developments in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), porous layered coordination polymers (CPs) have garnered attention due to their modular nature and tunable structures. These factors enable a number of properties and applications, including gas and guest sorption, storage and separation of gases and small molecules, catalysis, luminescence, sensing, magnetism, and energy storage and conversion. Among MOFs, two-dimensional (2D) compounds are also known as 2D CPs or 2D MOFs. Since the discovery of graphene in 2004, 2D materials have also been widely studied. Several 2D MOFs are suitable for exfoliation as ultrathin nanosheets similar to graphene and other 2D materials, making these layered structures useful and unique for various technological applications. Furthermore, these layered structures have fascinating topological networks and entanglements. This review provides an overview of different aspects of 2D MOF layered architectures such as topology, interpenetration, structural transformations, properties, and applications.

TL;DR: The advanced strategies in fabricating ultrathin defect-free MOF/COF membranes such as in situ growth, contra-diffusion method, layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly, metal-based precursor as the pre-functionalized layer, interface-assisted strategy, and laminated assembly of MOF-COF nanosheets are presented.
Abstract: Metal/covalent–organic framework (MOF/COF) membranes have attracted increasing research interest and have been considered as state-of-the-art platforms applied in various environment- and energy-related separation/transportation processes. To break the trade-off between permeability and selectivity to achieve ultimate separation, recent studies have been oriented towards how to design and exploit ultrathin MOF/COF membranes (i.e. sub-1 μm-thick). Given great advances made in the past five years, it is valuable to timely and systematically summarize the recent development and shed light on the future trend in this multidisciplinary field. In this review, we first present the advanced strategies in fabricating ultrathin defect-free MOF/COF membranes such as in situ growth, contra-diffusion method, layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly, metal-based precursor as the pre-functionalized layer, interface-assisted strategy, and laminated assembly of MOF/COF nanosheets. Then, the recent progress in some emerging applications of ultrathin MOF/COF membranes beyond gas separation is highlighted, including water treatment and seawater desalination, organic solvent nanofiltration, and energy-related separation/transportation (i.e. lithium ion separation and proton conductivity). Finally, some unsolved scientific and technical challenges associated with future perspectives in this field are discussed, inspiring the development of next-generation separation membranes.
