23 Dec 2019-Vol. 2, pp 7-24
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined high school students' leisure time preferences (N=437, 194 male, 44.4%; 243 female, 55.6%) while taking into account the school type, age and gender effect on their leisure preferences.
Abstract: The research paper examines high school students’ leisure time preferences (N=437, 194 male, 44.4%; 243 female, 55.6%) while taking into account the school type, age and gender effect on their leisure preferences. The study included mid and late adolescents whose age ranged from 14 to 19. The questionnaire consisted of socio-demographic and leisure time activity questions. The results point to significant differences between students in terms of culture-oriented, family-oriented and passively spent free time activities. A statistically significant difference was found in relation to spending time in a bar (passively-idly spent time) as older adolescents were more prone to it. A significant difference was noted in terms of attending church, sermons or lectures (religion-oriented free time) and actively doing sports (sport-oriented free time), where younger adolescents ascribed a higher importance to these activities as opposed to older adolescents. Gender was significant concerning family and home-oriented leisure activities, passively-idly spent activities, culture and sport-oriented activities. Future studies should incorporate a more comprehensive list of activities in order to provide an in-depth view of out-of-school activities and daily lifestyles.

TL;DR: Miliša et al. as mentioned in this paper obavljena na osnovi rezultata empirijskog istraživanja koje su proveli Mlinarević (2005) te Proroković i sur. (2006).
Abstract: Sažetak Područje slobodnog vremena mladih situira se sadržajnom dimenzijom provođenja slobodnog vremena koja određuje njihov prepoznatljiv životni stil. Rad se bavi usporedbom sadržaja (stilova) slobodnog vremena mladih i njihovim vrijednosnim orijentacijama u pet slavonskih gradova (Osijek, Požega, Slavonski Brod, Virovitica, Vinkovci) i Zadra.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss changes in the Croatian university students' leisure time acitivities based on a comparison of the data gathered in the youth researches in Croatia in 1999 in 2004.
Abstract: In this paper the authors discuss changes in the Croatian university students’ leisure time acitivities. The analysis is based on a comparison of the data gathered in the youth researches in Croatia in 1999 in 2004. Results showed that in a five year period the patterns of leisure time activities of Croatian university students statistically significantly changed, the change in relation between university students’ leisure time activities and their sex, age and residential status occurred. At the same time, the results confirmed there are stabile patterns of leisure time activities during five year period, these patterns are to a significant extent constituted by products and contents of mass culture. (IN CROATIAN: U ovom radu autorice analiziraju promjene u aktivnostima slobodnoga vremena hrvatskih studenata.

TL;DR: In this article, a notional and theoretic contextualisation of the development of the consumer culture, against the background of an ever increasing individualisation inside contemporary societies, is presented, where the authors analyze old and new theoretic contributions to the conception of consumer culture.
Abstract: The author offers a notional and theoretic contextualisation of the development of the consumer culture, against the background of an ever increasing individualisation inside contemporary societies. As she analyses old and new theoretic contributions to the conception of consumer culture, the author becomes increasingly aware of the role played by the environmental reflection of the consumer behaviour in the notional transformation of the consumer culture. Namely, the change from the work ethics to consumption ethics has, along with other factors, irrevocably changed the meaning of consumption not only in economics and culture, but also in everyday life, modifying the meaning of the consumption culture. With the replacement of the production with consumption socialisation the significance of the culture of consumption has grown to such an extent that it not only becomes the generator of social changes, but plays a decisive role in their understanding, as well. The symbols of the consumer culture begin to shape all social relations, dominating the conception of reality, everyday notions and ways of establishing identity. An even increasing consumption forces individuals to inter-dependence and the same time, paradoxically, to an ever greater individualisation, in which everyone is forced to invest his own choices

TL;DR: The authors found that participants in most extracurricular activities achieved better educational outcomes than non-participants even after controlling for social class, gender, and intellectual aptitude, and that participation in service and religious activities predicted lower rates of drinking and drug use.
Abstract: In this article, we summarize: (a) the arguments linking participation in structured leisure activities to positive youth development, (b) our findings on the association of extracurricular activity involvement with both educational and risky behavior outcomes during adolescence and young adulthood, and (c) our findings regarding possible mediating mechanisms of these associations. Participants in most extracurricular activities achieved better educational outcomes than non-participants even after controlling for social class, gender, and intellectual aptitude. Participation in service and religious activities predicted lower rates of drinking and drug use. Participation on school sports teams predicted both better educational outcomes and higher rates of drinking. The mediating mechanisms we discuss relate to identity formation, peer group membership, and attachment to non-familial adults.

TL;DR: The authors review studies on time use of children and adolescents around the world and discuss developmental implications of population differences and age, gender, and socioeconomic differences in activities and with whom time is spent are considered.
Abstract: The authors review studies on time use of children and adolescents around the world and discuss developmental implications of population differences. Industrialization and schooling are linked to dramatic declines in time spent on household and wage labor. This labor is often unchallenging, sometimes hazardous; developmental benefits often do not increase above a limited number of hours; hence, reduction in these activities opens time for activities that may be more developmentally beneficial. Adolescents in East Asian postindustrial societies spend this freed-up time in schoolwork, a use associated with lower intrinsic motivation but high achievement and economic productivity. Adolescents in North America spend more time in leisure, associated with greater self-direction but of an uncertain relation to development. Age, gender, and socioeconomic differences in activities and with whom time is spent are also considered. Language: en

TL;DR: For example, this paper examined young adult sequelae of participation in high school activities and identity group for 900 participants from the Michigan Study of Life Transitions and found that participation at grade 10 in high-school activities predicted later substance use, psychological adjustment, and educational and occupational outcomes.
Abstract: This study examined young adult sequelae of participation in high school activities and identity group for 900 participants from the Michigan Study of Life Transitions.Participation at Grade 10 in high school activities predicted later substance use, psychological adjustment, and educational and occupational outcomes.Prosocial activity participation predicted lower substance use and higher self-esteem and an increased likelihood of college graduation.Performing arts participation predicted more years of education as well as increases in drinking between ages 18 and 21 and higher rates of suicide attempts and psychologist visits by the age of 24.Sports participation predicted positive educational and occupational outcomes and lower levels of social isolation but also higher rates of drinking. Breakfast Club identity categories were predictive of both levels and longitudinal patterns in substance use, education and work outcomes, and psychological adjustment. In general, Jocks and Brains showed the most posi...

TL;DR: Youth reported all of these positive developmental experiences to occur significantly more often in youth programs than during school classes, and sports and arts programs stood out as providing more experiences related to development of initiative, although sports were also related to high stress.
Abstract: This study inventoried the types of developmental and negative experiences that youth encounter in different categories of extracurricular and community-based organized activities. A representative sample of 2,280 11th graders from 19 diverse high schools responded to a computer-administered protocol. Youth in faith-based activities reported higher rates of experiences related to identity, emotional regulation, and interpersonal development in comparison with other activities. Sports and arts programs stood out as providing more experiences related to development of initiative, although sports were also related to high stress. Service activities were associated with experiences related to development of teamwork, positive relationships, and social capital. Youth reported all of these positive developmental experiences to occur significantly more often in youth programs than during school classes.
