TL;DR: A survey of controlling devices and configurations found in existing systems found in many places for a wide variety of applications.
Abstract: With the increase in consumption of energy and population, there is a grave need to conserve energy in every way possible. The inability to access and control the appliances from remote locations is one of the major reasons for energy loss. A web or an android application is used by the users to give instructions to these systems. This system can make use of a host of communication methods such as Wi-Fi, GSM, Bluetooth, ZigBee. Different controlling devices and configurations can be found in existing systems. Such systems have been found already in many places for a wide variety of applications. This paper presents a survey of

TL;DR: The suggested home automation system has more features than conventional home automation systems such as an ultrasonic sensor is used for water level detection and soil moisture sensor is use for automatic plant irrigation system.
Abstract: In this paper a low cost and user friendly remote controlled home automation system is presented using Arduino board, Bluetooth module, smartphone, ultrasonic sensor and moisture sensor. A smartphone application is used in the suggested system which allows the users to control up to 18 devices including home appliances and sensors using Bluetooth technology. Nowadays, most of conventional home automation systems are designed for special purposes while proposed system is a general purpose home automation system. Which can easily be implement in existing home. The suggested system has more features than conventional home automation systems such as an ultrasonic sensor is used for water level detection and soil moisture sensor is use for automatic plant irrigation system. This paper also describes the hardware and software architecture of system, future work and scope. The proposed prototype of home automation system is implemented and tested on hardware and it gave the exact and expected results.

TL;DR: A new home automation technique with the use of IOT is proposed, so as to reduce the existing problems and make home automation more smart and secure.
Abstract: The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of devices such as vehicles, and home devices that contain electronics, software, actuators, connectivity which allows these things to connect, interact and exchange data. Automation is the technology by which a process is performed with minimum human efforts. Automation or automatic control is the use of discrete control systems for operating equipment. This paper is focused on five different techniques such as home automation system by using symmetric encryption scheme, Eet-based Smart Home intelligent system, by using set of sensors, low-cost Wi-Fi based automation system for Smart Home, monitoring and controlling the home appliances via World Wide Web. Even though, some issues arises in every method which are analyzed in analysis and discussion section. To improve these issues, this paper has proposed a new home automation technique with the use of IOT, so as to reduce the existing problems and make home automation more smart and secure. Index Terms Internet of Things (IOT), Home automation system.

TL;DR: Olivia-the virtual assistant can be installed anywhere inside any house as it lives inside Raspberry Pi which is a really compact and inexpensive computer and can be connected easily to devices such as microphone, speakers, cameras, PIR etc, having the ability to convert any home into a smart home.
Abstract: "Olivia" is a Virtual Assistant developed specifically for homes, which can be integrated into any home to make it a Smart Home. The user can interact solely through his/her voice with Olivia (the virtual assistant) to get any his/her work done around the house.Olivia-the virtual assistant can be installed anywhere inside any house as it lives inside Raspberry Pi which is a really compact and inexpensive computer and can be connected easily to devices such as microphone, speakers, cameras, PIR etc. Thus having the ability to convert any home into a smart home.In this system we have integrated Olivia into smart door lock for ‘The Smart Home Surveillance System’ implemented on Raspberry Pi. The system is smart enough to identify and differentiate between the owner and stranger using face recognition and act accordingly. In this system, Olivia can interact with the stranger at the door in case the owner is not present at home and will notify the owner about the visit using Email and SMS along with the image of the stranger.Similarly, Olivia can be integrated to other systems and appliances such as tube lights, air conditioners etc. making them smarter. The virtual assistant is highly beneficial for visually impaired people as it can perform various functions inside the house such as telling about the weather, stock prices, performing various calculations, telling jokes or playing songs all solely through voice.

TL;DR: A survey of all the existing systems and studies their features is presented and how to simulate the smart home model using Arduino Uno is shown.
Abstract: Smart Home Models are used to monitor and control home appliances through various methods, such as ZigBee, Bluetooth, and SMS. With the rapid growth of technology, the smart home model based on the Android application is designed using Android Smartphones. The smart home model will be able to ease the effort of physically challenged individuals in controlling their home appliances, such as lamps, fan, and Television. Simulation method in this research paper is done by Proteus simulator and Android Software (IDE). This paper presents a survey of all the existing systems and studies their features. This paper also shows how to simulate the smart home model using Arduino Uno.

TL;DR: This paper presents the design and implementation of a low cost but yet flexible and secure cell phone based home automation system that is designed to be low cost and scalable allowing variety of devices to be controlled with minimum changes to its core.
Abstract: Technology is a never ending process. To be able to design a product using the current technology that will be beneficial to the lives of others is a huge contribution to the community. This paper presents the design and implementation of a low cost but yet flexible and secure cell phone based home automation system. The design is based on a stand alone Arduino BT board and the home appliances are connected to the input/ output ports of this board via relays. The communication between the cell phone and the Arduino BT board is wireless. This system is designed to be low cost and scalable allowing variety of devices to be controlled with minimum changes to its core. Password protection is being used to only allow authorised users from accessing the appliances at home.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the potential of full home control using Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) modem to control home appliances such as light, conditional system, and security system via Short Message Service (SMS) text messages.
Abstract: This research work investigates the potential of `Full Home Control', which is the aim of the Home Automation Systems in near future. The analysis and implementation of the home automation technology using Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) modem to control home appliances such as light, conditional system, and security system via Short Message Service (SMS) text messages is presented in this paper. The proposed research work is focused on functionality of the GSM protocol, which allows the user to control the target system away from residential using the frequency bandwidths. The concept of serial communication and AT-commands has been applied towards development of the smart GSM-based home automation system. Home owners will be able to receive feedback status of any home appliances under control whether switched on or off remotely from their mobile phones. PIC16F887 microcontroller with the integration of GSM provides the smart automated house system with the desired baud rate of 9600 bps. The proposed prototype of GSM based home automation system was implemented and tested with maximum of four loads and shows the accuracy of ≥98%.
