TL;DR: The study showed that the National Humanization Policy is an important benchmark in the development of health practices and there is a pressing multiplication of related reflections on ways to promote human-ization in health services.
Abstract: The study aimed to investigate the scientific literature on Public Humanization Policies, available in online periodicals, from 2009 to 2012, in the health field. This is an integrative literature review conducted in the Virtual Health Library databases: Latin-America and Caribbean Health Sciences (Lilacs) and the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and Portal Capes. Data were collected in July 2013. To this end, the following Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) were used: "Humanization of Care," "Public Policies," "National Humanization Policy". The sample consisted of 27 articles about the investigated theme. From the publications selected for the research, three categories emerged according to their respective approaches: National Human-ization Policy: history and processes involved in its implementation; National Humanization Policy: health professionals contribution; Humanization and in the care process. The study showed that the National Humanization Policy is an important benchmark in the development of health practices. For this reason, there is a pressing multiplication of related reflections on ways to promote human-ization in health services.

TL;DR: The results show that the negative self-assessment of health status was associated with the number of referred chronic diseases and degree of dependence in basic activities of daily living, and there was also a tendency towards association with married elderly persons.
Abstract: Objective: To determine the association between negative self-assessment of health status and sociodemographic variables and health indicators in elderly persons registered with the Family Health Strategy of Campina Grande, Paraiba. Methodology: A cross-sectional study with home-based primary data collection was carried out among elderly persons of both genders. The variables studied were: self-assessment of health, socioeconomic and demographic factors, number of referred chronic diseases and degree of dependence in basic activities of daily living. Possible factors associated with self-assessment of health were verified through multivariate logistic regression. Results: We evaluated 420 elderly persons (68.1% of whom were women) with an average age of 71.57 years. There was a positive association between negative self-assessment of health status and elderly persons with two or three chronic diseases (OR=2.70; CI95%:1.47-4.96), four or more chronic diseases (OR=4.35; CI95%:1,58-12.01), a mild degree of dependence (OR=2.34; CI95%:1.13-4.87), moderate dependence (OR=2.11; CI95%:1.07-4.17) and those who were married (OR=2.46; CI95%:1.01-6.01). Conclusion: The results show that the negative self-assessment of health status was associated with the number of referred chronic diseases and degree of dependence in basic activities of daily living. There was also a tendency towards association with married elderly persons. The results suggest the need for actions aimed at the prevention and diagnosis of chronic diseases, as well as the promotion and maintenance of functional capacity and disability prevention or treatment.

TL;DR: Data is presented from the first follow-up survey of senior citizens in Brasil, called the Epidoso Project, implemented since 1991 in the city of Sao Paulo, with a risk analysis for death and disability.
Abstract: Population aging leads to an increase in the prevalence of chronic and disabling diseases, as well as a change in the public health paradigm. Diseases diagnosed in the elderly are generally not curable; if not properly treated and monitored over time, they tend to generate complications and sequelae that impair patients' independence and autonomy. Health is no longer measured by the presence or absence of disease, but by the degree of preservation of functional capacity. Factors for healthy aging with good functional capacity and those which increase the risk of death and disability need to be identified by longitudinal surveys that include the elderly population living in the community. This article presents data from the first follow-up survey of senior citizens in Brasil, called the Epidoso Project (from "epi" as in "epidemiologic" and "idoso" or "elderly" in Portuguese) implemented since 1991 in the city of Sao Paulo. The socio-demographic, clinical, and functional characteristics of a cohort of elderly are discussed, with a risk analysis for death and disability, and the implications for health planning are considered.

TL;DR: In the case of Brazil, a sharp and widespread fertility decline began by the end of the 1960s and an accelerated population aging process can thus be expected as mentioned in this paper, which will necessarily be faster and with deeper structural changes, demographically speaking, than in First World countries, for two reasons: fertility decline in Brazil was faster, and it took place in a population with a younger age structure.
Abstract: Contrary to common sense, the population aging process is due to the decline in fertility rather than mortality. The aging process began around the end of the 19th century in a number of Western European countries, expanded to the rest of the so-called First World over the past century, and reached several Third World countries afterwards, including Brazil over the last decades. In the Brazilian case, a sharp and widespread fertility decline began by the end of the 1960s, and an accelerated population aging process can thus be expected. This process will necessarily be faster and with deeper structural changes, demographically speaking, than in First World countries, for two reasons: the fertility decline in Brazil was faster, and it took place in a population with a younger age structure.

TL;DR: The research showed improvement of non-medical health care productivity and greater accessibility by users and the "user embracement team" solved 50% of the health problems themselves after nine months.
Abstract: The subject of this paper is changes in health care when "user embracement" is used as a strategic aim. According to the "user embracement" concept, health care clients are the center of the health services' organization, including the following: 1) care for everyone seeking it, thus guaranteeing universal accessibility; 2) reorganization of the work process, such that its central thrust is shifted from the physician to the multiprofessional staff, or "user embracement team", in charge of "hearing" users and becoming involved in solving their health problems; and 3) solidarity, humanity, and citizenship as parameters for the relationship between health care users and providers. The research showed improvement of non-medical health care productivity and greater accessibility by users. After nine months, the "user embracement team" solved 50% of the health problems themselves. The above-mentioned effects were also linked to workers' motivation, leading to greater creativity in the work process.

TL;DR: This article argues the central ideas of the humanization as opposition to the violence; quality assistance offer, articulating the technological advances with welcoming; professional working terms improvement; and communicational process enlargement, central axis of the texts.
Abstract: The term "humanization" has been employed constantly in the health field. It is the base of a wide set of initiatives, even though the concept does not have a clear definition. Generally, it refers to a kind of assistance that gives importance to the technical quality of care, associated with recognition of patients' rights, subjectivity and culture. Such concept intends to guide a new praxis in the care production in health. This article, of exploratory mark, aims analyze the speech of the Health Department on the assistance humanization. We investigate the meanings and expectations associates to the humanization idea from the analysis of the official texts, retaking a critical dialog with the authors of the area of public health and of the social sciences. We argue the central ideas of the humanization as opposition to the violence; quality assistance offer, articulating the technological advances with welcoming; professional working terms improvement; and communicational process enlargement, central axis of the texts.

TL;DR: The article discusses the contribution by various authors to the discussion forum on Human Aging and the National Household Sample Surveys, featuring studies on access to and utilization of health services by the elderly, the epidemiological pattern of breast cancer in elderly women, and the validity of using proxy respondents in research on self-perceived health status.
Abstract: This article examines the new demographic and epidemiological reality in Brazil, based on data collected and organized in the Health Supplement of the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD-Health). It highlights the urgency of changes and innovations in health care paradigms for the elderly population with a preventive approach based on comprehensive education and care. As key concepts, the article emphasizes the need to preserve autonomy, participation, care, self-satisfaction, and the possibility of elder citizens being active in various social contexts. It also discusses the contribution by various authors to the discussion forum on Human Aging and the National Household Sample Surveys, coordinated by Cadernos de Saude Publica/Reports in Public Health, featuring studies on access to and utilization of health services by the elderly, the epidemiological pattern of breast cancer in elderly women, and the validity of using proxy respondents in research on self-perceived health status, concluding that the PNAD data are consistent and can be used by the scientific community.
