Hydraulic and coastal structures in international perspective

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors bring some international perspectives on the policy, design, construction, and monitoring aspects of Hydraulic and Coastal Structures in general, and whenever possible, to present some comparison (or reasons for differences) between the experiences of various countries and/or geographical regions.
Abstract: The objective of this paper is to bring some international perspectives on the policy, design, construction, and monitoring aspects of Hydraulic and Coastal Structures in general, and whenever possible, to present some comparison (or reasons for differences) between the experiences of various countries and/or geographical regions. This chapter reviews the trends of our hydraulic/coastal engineering profession and presents an overview of miscellaneous aspects, which should be a part of the entire design process for civil engineering structures. This overview ranges from initial problem identification boundary condition definition and functional analysis, to design concept generation, selection, detailing an costing and includes an examination of the construction and maintenance considerations and quality assurance/quality control aspects. It also indicates the principles and methods, which support the design procedure making reference as appropriate to other parts of the chapter. It must be recognized that the design process is a complex iterative process and my be described in more than one way. Some speculation on the possible future needs and/or trends in hydraulic and coastal structures in the larger international perspective is also presented briefly.

Abstract: A description is given of a model developed for the prediction of the dissipation of energy in random waves breaking on a beach The dissipation rate per breaking wave is estimated from that in a bore of corresponding height, while the probability of occurrence of breaking waves is estimated on the basis of a wave height distribution with an upper cut-off which in shallow water is determined mainly by the local depth A comparison with measurements of wave height decay and set-up, on a plane beach and on a beach with a bar-trough profile, indicates that the model is capable of predicting qualitatively and quantitatively all the main features of the data

Abstract: In this paper, we focus on the implementation and verification of an extended Boussinesq model for surf zone hydrodynamics in two horizontal dimensions The time-domain numerical model is based on the fully nonlinear Boussinesq equations As described in Part I of this two-part paper, the energy dissipation due to wave breaking is modeled by introducing an eddy viscosity term into the momentum equations, with the viscosity strongly localized on the front face of the breaking waves Wave runup on the beach is simulated using a permeable-seabed technique We apply the model to simulate two laboratory experiments in large wave basins They are wave transformation and breaking over a submerged circular shoal and solitary wave runup on a conical island Satisfactory agreement is found between the numerical results and the laboratory measurements

Abstract: Rock slopes and gravel beaches under wave attack The stability of slopes consisring of loose materials under wave attack have been investigated with the aid of small and large scale physical models. These slopes can be divided into rubble mound breakwaters, rubble mound revetments, rock beaches and gravel or shingle beaches. The structures may be treated as either statically or dynamically stable. No displacement of material or only very little is allowed for statically stabie structures. Displacement of stanes is called daaage. Dynamically stable structures are characterized by the forming of a profile under wave attack. Abstract: A numerical solution is obtained to describe the behaviour of a uniform bore over a sloping beach and the subsequent run-up and back-wash. The results exhibit features which have only previously been described in a qualitative manner. These include the formation’ of a landward-facing bore in the back-wash. A comprehensive set of results are presented for a typical initial subcritical bore height ratio.
