TLDR
Results provide the first evidence that hyper-arousal from sensory stimulation can lower visual thresholds, which has important implications for survival, sports, and everyday life.Abstract:
Arousal has long been known to influence behavior and serves as an underlying component of cognition and consciousness. However, the consequences of hyper-arousal for visual perception remain unclear. The present study evaluates the impact of hyper-arousal on two aspects of visual sensitivity: visual stereoacuity and contrast thresholds. Sixty-eight participants participated in two experiments. Thirty-four participants were randomly divided into two groups in each experiment: Arousal Stimulation or Sham Control. The Arousal Stimulation group underwent a 50-second cold pressor stimulation (immersing the foot in 0–2° C water), a technique known to increase arousal. In contrast, the Sham Control group immersed their foot in room temperature water. Stereoacuity thresholds (Experiment 1) and contrast thresholds (Experiment 2) were measured before and after stimulation. The Arousal Stimulation groups demonstrated significantly lower stereoacuity and contrast thresholds following cold pressor stimulation, whereas the Sham Control groups showed no difference in thresholds. These results provide the first evidence that hyper-arousal from sensory stimulation can lower visual thresholds. Hyper-arousal's ability to decrease visual thresholds has important implications for survival, sports, and everyday life.read more

Contrasted impact of land abandonment on soil erosion in Mediterranean agriculture fields.
Jesús Rodrigo-Comino,Jesús Rodrigo-Comino,Carlos Martínez-Hernández,Thomas Iserloh,Artemi Cerdà +4 more
TL;DR: In this article, 105 rainfall simulations were carried out in agriculture lands of the Mediterranean belt in Spain (vineyards in Malaga, almond orchards in Murcia, and orange and olive orchars in Valencia) and in paired abandoned lands to assess the impact of land abandonment on soil and water losses.

TL;DR: In this paper, a combined methodology was applied, using soil analysis, a small portable rainfall simulator and a Guelph permeameter on one experimental plot cultivated with vineyards with steep slopes.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated two agri-spillways (between 10 m and 15 m length, and slopes between 25.8° and 35°) by performing runoff experiments under extreme conditions (a motor driven pump that discharged water flows up to 1.33 l s-1 for 12 to 15 minutes: ≈1000 l).

How arousal modulates the visual contrast sensitivity function.
TL;DR: Lesmes et al. as discussed by the authors measured the full contrast sensitivity function as a function of emotional arousal in order to investigate potential interactions between spatial frequency and contrast, and used a Bayesian adaptive inference with a trial-to-trial information gain strategy and a fear-conditioned stimulus to manipulate arousal level.

Evaluation and application of summary statistic imputation to discover new height-associated loci.
TL;DR: This study demonstrates that summary statistics imputation is a very efficient and cost-effective way to identify and fine-map trait-associated loci and test its capacity to discover novel associations.

Comparative sensitivity of exercise, cold pressor and ergonovine testing in provoking attacks of variant angina in patients with active disease
TL;DR: The sensitivity of the ergonovine test is very high in patients with active variant angina and that exercise will provoke angina with ST elevation in about 30% of these cases, in contrast to the cold pressor test, which is too low to be of much clinical value.

TL;DR: It is concluded that extremely rapid and significant changes in temporal filtering and bursting occur in the LGNd as awake subjects shift between alert and inattentive states.

Here is looking at you: Emotional faces predominate in binocular rivalry.
TL;DR: Data clearly demonstrate that emotional facial expressions predominate over neutral expressions; they are more often the first percept and they are perceived for longer durations, which supports that emotionally significant visual stimuli are preferentially perceived.
