Abstract: A nonlinear, physics-based model of the longitudinal dynamics for an air-breathing hypersonic vehicle is developed. The model is derived from first principles and captures a number of complex interactions between the propulsion system, aerodynamics, and structural dynamics. Unlike conventional aircraft, air-breathing hypersonic vehicles require that the propulsion system be highly integrated into the airframe. Furthermore, full-scale hypersonic aircraft tend to have very lightweight, flexible structures that have low natural frequencies. Therefore, the first bending mode of the fuselage is important, as its deflection affects the amount of airflow entering the engine, thus influencing the performance of the propulsion system. The equations of motion for the flexible aircraft are derivedusingLagrange’sequations.Theequationsof motioncaptureinertial couplingeffectsbetween thepitch and normal accelerations of the aircraft and the structural dynamics. The linearized aircraft dynamics are found to be unstableand,inmostcases,exhibitnonminimumphasebehavior.Thelinearizedmodelalsoindicatesthatthereisan aeroelastic mode that has a natural frequency more than twice the frequency of the fuselage bending mode, and the short-period mode is very strongly coupled with the bending mode of the fuselage.

Abstract: We present multicomponent flow models derived from the kinetic theory of gases and investigate the symmetric hyperbolic-parabolic structure of the resulting system of partial differential equations. We address the Cauchy problem for smooth solutions as well as the existence of deflagration waves, also termed anchored waves. We further discuss related models which have a similar hyperbolic-parabolic structure, notably the Saint-Venant system with a temperature equation as well as the equations governing chemical equilibrium flows. We next investigate multicomponent ionized and magnetized flow models with anisotropic transport fluxes which have a different mathematical structure. We finally discuss numerical algorithms specifically devoted to complex chemistry flows, in particular the evaluation of multicomponent transport properties, as well as the impact of multicomponent transport.

Abstract: Hypersonic flight powered by airbreathing engines offers the potential for faster response time at long ranges, and reduced cost for access-to-space. In the present paper the operating environment of typical hypersonic vehicles are discussed, including results for the radiation equilibrium wall temperature of external vehicle surfaces and the flow properties through three sample engines spanning the range of hydrocarbon-fueled Mach 4-8 flight and hydrogen-fueled flight at speeds up to Mach 17. Flow conditions at several locations through the sample engines were calculated to provide indications of the required operating flow environment. Additional system consideration such a seals, joints, vehicle integration and in-service engineering are addressed.

Abstract: A method is described for the minimization of a function of n variables, which depends on the comparison of function values at the (n 41) vertices of a general simplex, followed by the replacement of the vertex with the highest value by another point. The simplex adapts itself to the local landscape, and contracts on to the final minimum. The method is shown to be effective and computationally compact. A procedure is given for the estimation of the Hessian matrix in the neighbourhood of the minimum, needed in statistical estimation problems.
