Identification of inter-area oscillations using Zolotarev filter bank with eigen realization algorithm

Abstract: Inter-area oscillations can be identified by analyzing the signals obtained from Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) dispersed across the power network. In this paper, signals obtained from PMU are decomposed into monocomponent signals by a filter bank based on Zolotarev polynomials. A narrow bandwidth of 0.1 Hz is designed in the range of 0 to 1 Hz using Zolotarev polynomial based filter bank. Modal frequency and damping are estimated from the decomposed monocomponent signals through Eigen Realization Algorithm (ERA). The proposed method is demonstrated on two-area test system and the simulation results are presented.

Abstract: A method, called the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA), is developed for modal parameter identification and model reduction of dynamic systems from test data. A new approach is introduced in conjunction with the singular value decomposition technique to derive the basic formulation of minimum order realization which is an extended version of the Ho-Kalman algorithm. The basic formulation is then transformed into modal space for modal parameter identification. Two accuracy indicators are developed to quantitatively identify the system modes and noise modes. For illustration of the algorithm, examples are shown using simulation data and experimental data for a rectangular grid structure.

Abstract: A major power outage occurred in Western North America on August 10, 1996. In this paper, the authors describe the simulation of this disturbance using a transient stability program. Initially, the sequence of events was simulated using the standard WSCC dynamic database, and the simulations did not agree with the disturbance recordings. Several model additions and data modifications were made before the simulations approximated the disturbance recordings. These model changes are discussed in the paper.

Abstract: This paper describes a new power system stabilizer (PSS) design for damping power system oscillations focusing on interarea modes. The input to the PSS consists of two signals. The first signal is mainly to damp the local mode in the area where PSS is located using the generator rotor speed as an input signal. The second is an additional global signal for damping interarea modes. Two global signals are suggested; the tie-line active power and speed difference signals. The choice of PSS location, input signals and tuning is based on modal analysis and frequency response information. These two signals can also be used to enhance damping of interarea modes using SVC located in the middle of the transmission circuit connecting the two oscillating groups. The effectiveness and robustness of the new design are tested on a 19-generator system having characteristics and structure similar to the Western North American grid.
