The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images.
Abstract
MUCKE aims to mine a large volume of images, to structure them conceptually and to use this conceptual structuring in order to improve large-scale image retrieval. The last decade witnessed important progress concerning low-level image representations. However, there are a number problems which need to be solved in order to unleash the full potential of image mining in applications. The central problem with low-level representations is the mismatch between them and the human interpretation of image content. This problem can be instantiated, for instance, by the incapability of existing descriptors to capture spatial relationships between the concepts represented or by their incapability to convey an explanation of why two images are similar in a content-based image retrieval framework. We start by assessing existing local descriptors for image classification and by proposing to use co-occurrence matrices to better capture spatial relationships in images. The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images. Consequently, we introduce methods which tackle these two problems and compare results to state of the art methods. Thermal biology of the deep-sea vent annelid Paralvinella grasslei:in vivo studies

TL;DR: The results demonstrate that P. grasslei survives a 30 min exposure at 30°C, and suggest that the upper thermal limit of this species is slightly above this temperature, and the first sequences for vent annelid hsp70 are provided.

The Escherichia coli histone-like protein HU has a role in stationary phase adaptive mutation.

TL;DR: Data is presented showing that the histone-like protein, HU, has a role in the molecular pathway by which adaptive Lac+ mutants arise in E. coli strain FC40, and effects of HU mutations on adaptive mutation and on growth-dependent mutations reveal novel functions for HU in mutagenesis.

1,8-Cineole Ameliorates Steatosis of Pten Liver Specific KO Mice via Akt Inactivation

TL;DR: 1,8-cineole has potential as a candidate to treat NASH by inactivating the Akt/PI3-kinase pathway by downregulated collagen 1a1 expression and improved liver fibrosis.

A Rat Immobilization Model Based on Cage Volume Reduction: A Physiological Model for Bed Rest?

TL;DR: An innovative new model of muscle disuse for rodents is presented, confined to a reduced space designed to restrict their locomotion movements and allow them to drink and eat easily, without generating physical stress, to study disuse-induced changes in muscle and bone.

Tracing the fossil pollen record of Hedyosmum (Chloranthaceae), an old lineage with recent Neotropical diversification

TL;DR: It is concluded that C. microclavatus is related to Hedyosmum through a phylogenetic analysis of pollen traits of Chloranthaceae, and the hypothesis of a recent radiation of the genus as a consequence of the uplift of the tropical Andes is supported.

Iris recognition: an emerging biometric technology

TL;DR: This paper examines automated iris recognition as a biometrically based technology for personal identification and verification from the observation that the human iris provides a particularly interesting structure on which to base a technology for noninvasive biometric assessment.
