TLDR
The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images.Abstract:
MUCKE aims to mine a large volume of images, to structure them conceptually and to use this conceptual structuring in order to improve large-scale image retrieval. The last decade witnessed important progress concerning low-level image representations. However, there are a number problems which need to be solved in order to unleash the full potential of image mining in applications. The central problem with low-level representations is the mismatch between them and the human interpretation of image content. This problem can be instantiated, for instance, by the incapability of existing descriptors to capture spatial relationships between the concepts represented or by their incapability to convey an explanation of why two images are similar in a content-based image retrieval framework. We start by assessing existing local descriptors for image classification and by proposing to use co-occurrence matrices to better capture spatial relationships in images. The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images. Consequently, we introduce methods which tackle these two problems and compare results to state of the art methods. Directional line detectors in correlated noisy environments
TL;DR: The technique is a generalization of the analysis of variance applied to the symmetrically balanced incomplete-blocks design and is robust and superior to the polynomial-approximation-based detector and the classical Prewitt detector.

3D Voronoi Skeletons and Their Usage for the Characterization and Recognition of 3D Organ Shape
TL;DR: The paper describes a procedure for the generation of the Blum skeleton (medial axis) of large, complex, digitized 3D objects, a 3D generalization of the Voronoi skeleton concept, which is already in routine use for 2D shapes.

Involvement of formyl peptide receptors in receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) - and amyloid beta 1-42-induced signal transduction in glial cells
Alexander Slowik,Julika Merres,Anne Elfgen,Sandra Jansen,Fabian Mohr,Christoph Jan Wruck,Thomas Pufe,Lars-Ove Brandenburg +7 more
TL;DR: A functional interaction between FPRL1/FPR1 and RAGE in RAGE ligands S100B- or AGE-mediated signalling by ERK1/2 phosphorylation and cAMP level measurement is shown and suggests both formyl peptide receptors play an essential role in Aβ1-42-induced signal transduction in glial cells.
