TLDR
The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images.
Abstract
MUCKE aims to mine a large volume of images, to structure them conceptually and to use this conceptual structuring in order to improve large-scale image retrieval. The last decade witnessed important progress concerning low-level image representations. However, there are a number problems which need to be solved in order to unleash the full potential of image mining in applications. The central problem with low-level representations is the mismatch between them and the human interpretation of image content. This problem can be instantiated, for instance, by the incapability of existing descriptors to capture spatial relationships between the concepts represented or by their incapability to convey an explanation of why two images are similar in a content-based image retrieval framework. We start by assessing existing local descriptors for image classification and by proposing to use co-occurrence matrices to better capture spatial relationships in images. The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images. Consequently, we introduce methods which tackle these two problems and compare results to state of the art methods. A transient ischemic environment induces reversible compaction of chromatin

TL;DR: These studies exemplify the dynamic capacity of chromatin architecture to physically respond to environmental conditions, directly link cellular energy status to chromatin compaction and provide insight into the effect ischemia has on the nuclear architecture of cells.

Ecology of cryptic invasions: latitudinal segregation among Watersipora (Bryozoa) species

TL;DR: The distribution of Watersipora-complex lineages on different coastlines is shown to be temperature correlated, and pre-exisitng temperature-based adaptations may play a key role in determining invasion patterns.

The Early Worm Catches the Bird? Productivity and Patterns of Trichobilharzia szidati Cercarial Emission from Lymnaea stagnalis.

TL;DR: Although bird schistosomes, such as T. szidati constitute only a fraction of the diverse trematode communities in the studied aquatic ecosystem, their cercariae can still pose a considerable risk for humans of getting cercarial dermatitis (swimmer's itch) due to the high number of cerbariae emitted from infected snails.

Reverse taxonomy applied to the Brachionus calyciflorus cryptic species complex: Morphometric analysis confirms species delimitations revealed by molecular phylogenetic analysis and allows the (re)description of four species

TL;DR: This study applies a reverse taxonomy approach to the Brachionus calyciflorus species complex, a commonly studied freshwater monogonont rotifer, and confirms the existence of four cryptic species that have been recently suggested by a molecular study.

Plasticity in variation of xylem and phloem cell characteristics of Norway spruce under different local conditions.

TL;DR: Examination of climate–radial growth relationships of Norway spruce from three contrasting locations in the temperate climatic zone revealed that growth was in general less dependent on precipitation than on temperature; however, growth sensitivity to local conditions differed among the sites.

Iris recognition: an emerging biometric technology

TL;DR: This paper examines automated iris recognition as a biometrically based technology for personal identification and verification from the observation that the human iris provides a particularly interesting structure on which to base a technology for noninvasive biometric assessment.
