TL;DR: The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images.
Abstract: MUCKE aims to mine a large volume of images, to structure them conceptually and to use this conceptual structuring in order to improve large-scale image retrieval. The last decade witnessed important progress concerning low-level image representations. However, there are a number problems which need to be solved in order to unleash the full potential of image mining in applications. The central problem with low-level representations is the mismatch between them and the human interpretation of image content. This problem can be instantiated, for instance, by the incapability of existing descriptors to capture spatial relationships between the concepts represented or by their incapability to convey an explanation of why two images are similar in a content-based image retrieval framework. We start by assessing existing local descriptors for image classification and by proposing to use co-occurrence matrices to better capture spatial relationships in images. The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images. Consequently, we introduce methods which tackle these two problems and compare results to state of the art methods. TL;DR: The image coding results, calculated from actual file sizes and images reconstructed by the decoding algorithm, are either comparable to or surpass previous results obtained through much more sophisticated and computationally complex methods.
Abstract: Embedded zerotree wavelet (EZW) coding, introduced by Shapiro (see IEEE Trans. Signal Processing, vol.41, no.12, p.3445, 1993), is a very effective and computationally simple technique for image compression. We offer an alternative explanation of the principles of its operation, so that the reasons for its excellent performance can be better understood. These principles are partial ordering by magnitude with a set partitioning sorting algorithm, ordered bit plane transmission, and exploitation of self-similarity across different scales of an image wavelet transform. Moreover, we present a new and different implementation based on set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT), which provides even better performance than our previously reported extension of EZW that surpassed the performance of the original EZW. The image coding results, calculated from actual file sizes and images reconstructed by the decoding algorithm, are either comparable to or surpass previous results obtained through much more sophisticated and computationally complex methods. In addition, the new coding and decoding procedures are extremely fast, and they can be made even faster, with only small loss in performance, by omitting entropy coding of the bit stream by the arithmetic code.

TL;DR: Eight constructs decellularized hearts by coronary perfusion with detergents, preserved the underlying extracellular matrix, and produced an acellular, perfusable vascular architecture, competent a cellular valves and intact chamber geometry that could generate pump function in a modified working heart preparation.
Abstract: About 3,000 individuals in the United States are awaiting a donor heart; worldwide, 22 million individuals are living with heart failure. A bioartificial heart is a theoretical alternative to transplantation or mechanical left ventricular support. Generating a bioartificial heart requires engineering of cardiac architecture, appropriate cellular constituents and pump function. We decellularized hearts by coronary perfusion with detergents, preserved the underlying extracellular matrix, and produced an acellular, perfusable vascular architecture, competent acellular valves and intact chamber geometry. To mimic cardiac cell composition, we reseeded these constructs with cardiac or endothelial cells. To establish function, we maintained eight constructs for up to 28 d by coronary perfusion in a bioreactor that simulated cardiac physiology. By day 4, we observed macroscopic contractions. By day 8, under physiological load and electrical stimulation, constructs could generate pump function (equivalent to about 2% of adult or 25% of 16-week fetal heart function) in a modified working heart preparation.

Abstract: This paper examines automated iris recognition as a biometrically based technology for personal identification and verification. The motivation for this endeavor stems from the observation that the human iris provides a particularly interesting structure on which to base a technology for noninvasive biometric assessment. In particular the biomedical literature suggests that irises are as distinct as fingerprints or patterns of retinal blood vessels. Further, since the iris is an overt body, its appearance is amenable to remote examination with the aid of a machine vision system. The body of this paper details issues in the design and operation of such systems. For the sake of illustration, extant systems are described in some amount of detail.

TL;DR: This study reports the first series of non-destructive 3D visualizations of inhalable pharmaceutical particles and presents a powerful tool to dissect and observe the interior of pharmaceutical particles, including those of a respirable size.
Abstract: To demonstrate the novel application of nano X-ray computed tomography (NanoXCT) for visualizing and quantifying the internal structures of pharmaceutical particles. An Xradia NanoXCT-100, which produces ultra high-resolution and non-destructive imaging that can be reconstructed in three-dimensions (3D), was used to characterize several pharmaceutical particles. Depending on the particle size of the sample, NanoXCT was operated in Zernike Phase Contrast (ZPC) mode using either: 1) large field of view (LFOV), which has a two-dimensional (2D) spatial resolution of 172 nm; or 2) high resolution (HRES) that has a resolution of 43.7 nm. Various pharmaceutical particles with different physicochemical properties were investigated, including raw (2-hydroxypropyl)-beta-cyclodextrin (HβCD), poly (lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) microparticles, and spray-dried particles that included smooth and nanomatrix bovine serum albumin (BSA), lipid-based carriers, and mannitol. Both raw HβCD and PLGA microparticles had a network of voids, whereas spray-dried smooth BSA and mannitol generally had a single void. Lipid-based carriers and nanomatrix BSA particles resulted in low quality images due to high noise-to-signal ratio. The quantitative capabilities of NanoXCT were also demonstrated where spray-dried mannitol was found to have an average void volume of 0.117 ± 0.247 μm3 and average void-to-material percentage of 3.5%. The single PLGA particle had values of 1993 μm3 and 59.3%, respectively. This study reports the first series of non-destructive 3D visualizations of inhalable pharmaceutical particles. Overall, NanoXCT presents a powerful tool to dissect and observe the interior of pharmaceutical particles, including those of a respirable size.

TL;DR: Evidence of a nonlinear effect of offspring inbreeding coefficient on number of larvae dispersing is found, suggesting that females adjust clutch size and the delay until laying in response to being related to their mate.
Abstract: We investigate the effect of offspring and maternal inbreeding on maternal and offspring traits associated with early offspring fitness in the burying beetle Nicrophorus vespilloides. We conducted two experiments. In the first experiment, we manipulated maternal inbreeding only (keeping offspring outbred) by generating mothers that were outbred, moderately inbred or highly inbred. Meanwhile, in the second experiment, we manipulated offspring inbreeding only (keeping females outbred) by generating offspring that were outbred, moderately inbred or highly inbred. In both experiments, we monitored subsequent effects on breeding success (number of larvae), maternal traits (clutch size, delay until laying, laying skew, laying spread and egg size) and offspring traits (hatching success, larval survival, duration of larval development and average larval mass). Maternal inbreeding reduced breeding success, and this effect was mediated through lower hatching success and greater larval mortality. Furthermore, inbred mothers produced clutches where egg laying was less skewed towards the early part of laying than outbred females. This reduction in the skew in egg laying is beneficial for larval survival, suggesting that inbred females adjusted their laying patterns facultatively, thereby partially compensating for the detrimental effects of maternal inbreeding on offspring. Finally, we found evidence of a nonlinear effect of offspring inbreeding coefficient on number of larvae dispersing. Offspring inbreeding affected larval survival and larval development time but also unexpectedly affected maternal traits (clutch size and delay until laying), suggesting that females adjust clutch size and the delay until laying in response to being related to their mate.

TL;DR: This work proposes an algorithm to detect multiple JPEG compressions, specifically up to four coding cycles, that leverages the Task-driven Non-negative Matrix Factorization (TNMF) model, fed with histograms of the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) of the image under analysis.
Abstract: Due to the increasingly unbridled practice of sharing visual content on the web, tracing back past history of uploaded images is getting far from being an easy task Nonetheless, forensic analysts might be interested in probing digital history of content published on the web to assess its authenticity In this vein, a possible indicator of image integrity is the number of JPEG compressions a picture underwent As a matter of fact, JPEG compression is typically operated first at image inception time directly on the acquisition device Then, it is customary re-applied every time an image is manipulated or shared through social media For this reason, the more the applied JPEG compressions, the more the likelihood that an image underwent some editing In this work, we propose an algorithm to detect multiple JPEG compressions, specifically up to four coding cycles This approach leverages the Task-driven Non-negative Matrix Factorization (TNMF) model, fed with histograms of the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) of the image under analysis Experimental results show the effectiveness of the method if compared with the state-of-the-art, confirming this strategy as a viable solution for detecting multiple JPEG compressions

TL;DR: It is concluded that interactions and hybridization between contrasting ecotypes is a risk that could result in deleterious impacts and possible outbreeding depression in stocked fish populations from small boreal lakes in Quebec and Ontario, Canada.
Abstract: Supplementation stocking is a commonly used management tool to sustain exploited fish populations. Possible negative consequences of supplementation on local stocks are a concern for the conservation of wild fish populations. However, the direct impacts of supplementation on life history traits of local populations have rarely been investigated. In addition, intraspecific hybridization between contrasting ecotypes (planktivorous and piscivorous) has been seldom considered in supplementation plans. Here, we combined genetic (genotype-by-sequencing analysis) and life history traits to document the effects of supplementation on maximum length, growth rates, body condition and genetic admixture in stocked populations of two Lake Trout ecotypes from small boreal lakes in Quebec and Ontario, Canada. In both ecotypes, the length of stocked individuals was greater than local individuals and, in planktivorous-stocked populations, most stocked fish exhibited a planktivorous-like growth while 20% of fish exhibited piscivorous-like growth. The body condition index was positively related to the proportion of local genetic background, but this pattern was only observed in stocked planktivorous populations. We conclude that interactions and hybridization between contrasting ecotypes is a risk that could result in deleterious impacts and possible outbreeding depression. We discuss the implications of these findings for supplementation stocking.
