TLDR
The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images.
Abstract
MUCKE aims to mine a large volume of images, to structure them conceptually and to use this conceptual structuring in order to improve large-scale image retrieval. The last decade witnessed important progress concerning low-level image representations. However, there are a number problems which need to be solved in order to unleash the full potential of image mining in applications. The central problem with low-level representations is the mismatch between them and the human interpretation of image content. This problem can be instantiated, for instance, by the incapability of existing descriptors to capture spatial relationships between the concepts represented or by their incapability to convey an explanation of why two images are similar in a content-based image retrieval framework. We start by assessing existing local descriptors for image classification and by proposing to use co-occurrence matrices to better capture spatial relationships in images. The main focus in MUCKE is on cleaning large scale Web image corpora and on proposing image representations which are closer to the human interpretation of images. Consequently, we introduce methods which tackle these two problems and compare results to state of the art methods. Perfusion-decellularized matrix: using nature's platform to engineer a bioartificial heart

TL;DR: Eight constructs decellularized hearts by coronary perfusion with detergents, preserved the underlying extracellular matrix, and produced an acellular, perfusable vascular architecture, competent a cellular valves and intact chamber geometry that could generate pump function in a modified working heart preparation.

A morphogram for silica-witherite biomorphs and its application to microfossil identification in the early earth rock record

TL;DR: Results show that the morphology of an individual microstructure is a poor criterion for biogenicity, and biomorphs may be distinguished from actual populations of cellular microfossils by their wide, unimodal size distribution.

Quantitative Genetic Analysis Indicates Natural Selection on Leaf Phenotypes Across Wild Tomato Species (Solanum sect. Lycopersicon; Solanaceae)

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that some trait transitions between species could have involved few, large-effect genetic changes, allowing rapid responses to new environmental conditions, and macroevolutionary transitions between vastly different stomatal distributions may not be constrained when such large- effect mutations are available.

Circulation of the Cultivable Symbiont Serratia symbiotica in Aphids Is Mediated by Plants

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that cultivable S. symbiotica can be horizontally transferred from infected to uninfected aphids sharing the same plant, providing first direct evidence that plants can mediate horizontal transmission of certain strains of this symbiont species.

P-Rex1 - a multidomain protein that regulates neurite differentiation

TL;DR: P-Rex1 is identified as a Rac3-GEF in neuronal cells that localises to, and regulates, actin cytoskeletal dynamics at the axonal growth cone to in turn regulate neurite differentiation.

Antibiofilm efficacy of photoactivated curcumin, triple and double antibiotic paste, 2% chlorhexidine and calcium hydroxide against Enterococcus fecalis in vitro

TL;DR: The results showed that light activated curcumin and triple antibiotic paste brought about complete disruption of the biofilm structure, while chlorhexidine and calcium hydroxide were not significantly different from the control (P > 0.05).
