TLDR
This Review distil several decades of intense (and often conflicting) research that defines the interface between the endocrine stress response and the immune system.Abstract:
Endogenous glucocorticoids are crucial to various physiological processes, including metabolism, development and inflammation. Since 1948, synthetic glucocorticoids have been used to treat various immune-related disorders. The mechanisms that underlie the immunosuppressive properties of these hormones have been intensely scrutinized, and it is widely appreciated that glucocorticoids have pleiotropic effects on the immune system. However, a clear picture of the cellular and molecular basis of glucocorticoid action has remained elusive. In this Review, we distil several decades of intense (and often conflicting) research that defines the interface between the endocrine stress response and the immune system.read more

Bo Shen,Xiao Yi,Yaoting Sun,Xiaojie Bi,Juping Du,Chao Zhang,Sheng Quan,Fangfei Zhang,Rui Sun,Liujia Qian,Weigang Ge,Wei Liu,Shuang Liang,Hao Chen,Ying Zhang,Jun Li,Jiaqin Xu,Zebao He,Baofu Chen,Jing Wang,Haixi Yan,Yufen Zheng,Donglian Wang,Jiansheng Zhu,Ziqing Kong,Zhouyang Kang,Xiao Liang,Xuan Ding,Guan Ruan,Nan Xiang,Xue Cai,Huanhuan Gao,Lu Li,Sainan Li,Qi Xiao,Tian Lu,Yi Zhu,Huafen Liu,Haixiao Chen,Tiannan Guo +39 more
TL;DR: This study revealed characteristic protein and metabolite changes in the sera of severe COVID-19 patients, which might be used in selection of potential blood biomarkers for severity evaluation.

Rethinking IL-6 and CRP: Why they are more than inflammatory biomarkers, and why it matters.
TL;DR: It is argued that both IL-6 and CRP participate in somatic maintenance efforts; hence elevated levels indicate that an organism is investing in protection, preservation, and/or repair of somatic tissue.

Campos,Edward Ryder,Graham Duddy,Izabela Walczak,Klaus Okkenhaug,David J. Adams,Jacqueline D. Shields,Sarah A. Teichmann +19 more
TL;DR: This study demonstrates T cell de novo steroidogenesis as a mechanism of anti-tumor immunosuppression and a potential druggable target and shows that genetic inactivation or pharmacological inhibition of tumor-induced Th2-mediated de noovo steroidogenesis are sufficient to restore an efficient anti-Tumor immune response and restrict tumor growth.

How do glucocorticoids influence stress responses? Integrating permissive, suppressive, stimulatory, and preparative actions.
TL;DR: This review considers recent findings regarding GC action and generates criteria for determining whether a particular GC action permits, stimulates, or suppresses an ongoing stress-response or, as an additional category, is preparative for a subsequent stressor.

Neutrophil recruitment and function in health and inflammation
Elzbieta Kolaczkowska,Paul Kubes +1 more
TL;DR: The key features of the life of a neutrophil are discussed, from its release from bone marrow to its death, and the mechanisms that are used by neutrophils to promote protective or pathological immune responses at different sites are explained.

Macrophage activation and polarization.
TL;DR: The main functions of polarized macrophages are reviewed and the perspectives of this field are discussed, which include high endocytic clearance capacities and trophic factor synthesis, accompanied by reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion.

Resolution of inflammation: the beginning programs the end.
Charles N. Serhan,John Savill +1 more
TL;DR: Emerging evidence now suggests that an active, coordinated program of resolution initiates in the first few hours after an inflammatory response begins, and the mechanism required for inflammation resolution may underpin the development of drugs that can resolve inflammatory processes in directed and controlled ways.
