TL;DR: One hundred and three cases of renal parenchymal carcinoma were reviewed; nephrectomy was performed in 60 cases, 20 were found to be inoperable, and operation was not considered in the remaining cases as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: Summary 1. One hundred and three cases of renal parenchymal carcinoma are reviewed; nephrectomy was performed in 60 cases, 20 were found to be inoperable, and operation was not considered in the remaining cases. Post-mortem examinations were performed on 32 cases in the series. 2. The clinical features are analysed and their influence on prognosis discussed. 3. The tuniours are classified into three grades of malignancy according to histological criteria. 4. The spread of the tumour is described, with special reference to the sinister significance of tumour thrombosis of the renal vein. 5. Radiological features are described, stressing those that assist prognosis. 6. Nephrectomy is the only rational treatment in operable cases, and it is noted that the presence of a solitary metastasis is not a contraindication to surgery. The place of radiotherapy in treatment is indicated. 7. The survival rate for operable cases in this series compares favourably with that from the Mayo Clinic. 8. The lines on which the prognosis can be assessed are considered.

TL;DR: Renal and ureteric tumours form a relatively small but highly important part of urological practice and their behaviour appears capricious, for whilst some are extremely malignant others pursue a benign course, although nearly all have malignant potentialities.
Abstract: Renal and ureteric tumours form a relatively small but highly important part of urological practice. Their behaviour appears capricious, for whilst some are extremely malignant others pursue a benign course, although nearly all have malignant potentialities. Although early diagnosis is vitally necessary and is often possible by the use of modern methods, it does not always lead to cure because some of these tumours have an intrinsic malignancy which at present defies treatment. In the past the nomenclature has been confused; the current tendency to simpler classification, which will be followed here, has led to some clarification of the picture but there still remain some types of such infrequent occurrence that their behaviour cannot be foretold.

TL;DR: The Chemical Examination of Water, Sewage, Foods, and other Substances will be found very valuable to students preparing for the examination of the Institute of Chemistry, and can be recommended as a useful introductory treatise.
Abstract: IN this edition the authors have expanded the chapters on water and milk, given more details on the analysis of foods and beverages, and added “an outline of elementary toxicological analysis.” A very good feature is the inclusion of plenty of typical analyses. The book will be found very valuable to students preparing for the examination of the Institute of Chemistry, and can be recommended as a useful introductory treatise. Although the quoted results of water analyses are given with the acids and bases combined, there is no indication as to how the necessary calculations are to be made, and some of the sections are so condensed that it is doubtful if they are of value. A great drawback to the utility of the book is its high price. The Chemical Examination of Water, Sewage, Foods, and other Substances.By J. E. Purvis T. R. Hodgson. (Cambridge Public Health Series.)

TL;DR: The two latter are considered by some authorities to constitute " closed " tuberculosis, but the term does not appear to be quite accurate, as the pelvis is so extensively involved.
Abstract: The two latter are considered by some authorities to constitute \" closed \" tuberculosis, but the term does not appear to be quite accurate, as the pelvis is so extensively involved. It is difficult to place this particular specimen in the groups mentioned. If placed in Group 3 almost complete destruction of the whole kidney would be implied, and this is far from being the case. Such a specimen might be rightly considered as one of \" closed renal tuberculosis,\" and be placed accordingly in a final and fifth group under that heading. The term \" closed \" could then be considered inadmissible in cases falling into Groups 3 and 4.
