In this article, an appropriate pre-chirping through phase modulation can improve the nonlinear characteristics and maximum transmission length in NRZ based transmission systems over standard single mode fiber (SSMF).
Abstract
Chirped NRZ (nCRZ) modulation format has been presented for single channel and WDM 40 Gbit/s transmission. The transmission properties of cNRZ are compared with conventional NRZ and RZ signals and analysed by means of numerical simulations. It was shown that an appropriate pre-chirping through phase modulation can improve the nonlinear characteristics and maximum transmission length in NRZ based transmission systems over standard single mode fiber (SSMF). The results confirmed that the use of a cNRZ form reduces the self phase modulation-group velocity dispersion (SPM-GVD) impairments in SSMF compared to NRZ and RZ signal forms.

Chirp Control of an Electroabsorption Modulator to be used for Regeneration and Wavelength Conversion at 40 Gbit/s in All-Optical Networking

TL;DR: An analytical model for the chirP performance of an EAM capable of optical regeneration and simultaneous wavelength conversion operating at 40 Gbit/s is derived and an optimum range of bias voltage is determined to ensure reduced chirp operation when a two-tone signal is applied to the EAM.

A 40-Gb/s/ch WDM transmission with SPM/XPM suppression through prechirping and dispersion management

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed to combine prechirping with dispersion management scheme in such a way as to suppress the power penalty induced by self-phase modulation (SPM) and XPM in 40-Gb/s per channel WDM transmission systems with long-amplifier spacing.
