Industrial Plant Layout Analyzing Based on SNA

Abstract: Social network analysis (SNA) is a widely studied research topics, which has been increasingly being applied for solving different kind of problems, including industrial manufacturing ones. This paper focuses on the application of SNA on an industrial plant layout problem. The study aims at analyzing the importance of using SNA techniques to analyze important relations between entities in a manufacturing environment, such as jobs and resources in the context of industrial plant layout analysis. The study carried out enabled to obtain relevant results for the identification of relations among these entities for supporting to establish an appropriate plant layout for producing the jobs.

A. SNA measures

  • The main measures considered in SNA are cohesion measures and centrality measures.
  • Centrality measures identify the most prominent actors, i.e. those extensively involved in relationships with other network members [8].
  • Accordingly, the authors conclude that the expected relationship between sharing interests and communicating exists only for very active authors while less active authors do not answer everyone who has similar interests.
  • Therefore, their objective consisted on investigating fragmentation in water infrastructure planning, to understand how actors from different decision levels and sectors are represented, and which interests they follow [12].
  • Here, from the considered case study the data has been taken which has been analysed through various SNA tools.

A. Network modelling

  • Network consists of set of nodes connected with ties indicating interaction.
  • Using Netdraw the authors have represented the matrix in the form of collaboration network.
  • The network is made much interesting and meaningful by showing a variation in the representation of the resources and jobs in terms of shape, size, and colour.
  • With the data that has been collected from the case study and their details with three centralities has been shown in Table 2.
  • The relationship between the attributes (jobs and resources) is represented in Figure 1.

B. Network analysis

  • The main objective of network analysis is to breakdown and comprehend the complex information of the structure in to collaboration networks for potential synergies.
  • The centrality is used to find how influential a node is in the network and also the interrelations among them for its complete analysis.
  • Thus, the authors have identified the key resources which are having higher degree centrality can act as hubs and they can serve as the central elements of the industrial plant.
  • This data can be used to analyse the order in which the resources of the plant need to be arranged and how close each resource need to be from each other.
  • From the above analysis the authors have gained complete understanding of the various relations among the resources to complete the assigned jobs effectively.

Abstract: Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have a worldwide attraction because of its increasing popularity. The key enablers for the Internet of Things (IoT) are WSN, which plays an important role in future by collecting information through the cloud. Fog Computing, the latest innovations, connects sensor-based IoT devices to the cloud. Fog Computing is a decentralized computing infrastructure in which the data, compute, storage, and applications are distributed efficiently between the data source and the cloud. The main aim of Fog Computing is to reduce the amount of data transported to the cloud and hence increase the efficiency. The knowledge-upgraded IoT devices will be embedded with a piece of software into it, which can able to understand the Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS). Such attacks are not forwarded to the cloud and thus the cloud server down problem is avoided. The IoT devices enabled with such knowledge is connected together to form a Connected Dominating Set (CDS). The data routed through only such IoT devices will be directly connected to the cloud. The CDS-based approach reduces the search for a minimum group of IoT devices called nodes, thus forming the backbone network. Various CDS algorithms have been developed for constructing CDSs with minimum number of nodes. However, most of the research work does not focus on developing a CDS based on application and requirement. In this chapter, a Gateway-based Strategic CDS (GWS-CDS) is constructed based on strategy and communication range. Here, any node in the network assigned a critical communication range, which is in a strong neighbourhood and which is within the communication range of more than one network, will be selected as the starting node, instead of the node with maximum connectivity. If a node is not within a critical communication range, then the following factors will be increased: V. The other nodes for CDS construction are selected based on density and velocity. The focus of this research work was to construct a CDS in heterogeneous networks. The algorithm was tested with respect to three metrics—average CDS node size, average CDS Edge Size and average hop count per path. Simulation results showed that the proposed algorithm was better when compared to the existing algorithms.

Abstract: In this paper, focus is on the sustainable manufacturing systems functionalities, i.e., process planning and scheduling for effective and efficient performance of the system to achieve the desired objectives. The desired objectives for this research work have been considered according to the above-mentioned situation. Hence, makespan, throughput time, and energy consumption were identified as the most appropriate performance measures in line with the context of the problem. Mathematical model will be formulated for the performance measures by considering the realistic constraints. Unpredictable events such as machine breakdown or scheduled maintenance are most common in any manufacturing unit. Workload assignment with these disruptions is a challenge, and therefore, a new methodology has been developed for effective and efficient solutions. In this paper, a new social network analysis-based method is being proposed to identify the key machines that should not be disturbed due to its contribution toward achieving the best system’s performance. Moreover, an illustrative example along with three different configurations will be presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach. For execution, a Flexsim-based simulation approach will be followed, and with different instances, the proposed methodology can be executed. The validation of the proposed approach and its effectiveness will be evaluated through comparison with different instances, and finally the efficiency of the proposed approach will be confirmed with the results.

Abstract: Six-Sigma, a data-driven methodology, employed to improve the process in terms of Defect reduction or process optimization. In this paper, an experimental study is presented optimizing the cutting parameters while machining of shoulder bolt in a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) turning machine to reduce the cycle time. This study identifies, the effects of cutting speed, feed rate and dwell time on Thread rolling diameter (TRD) in CNC turning machine that was experimentally investigated. The experimentation plan is designed using six sigma D-M-A-I-C methodology, and the subsequent statistical analysis has been done using Minitab-16 software. Shainin based variable search tool has been used to investigate the design parameters that contribute to the reduction of the cycle time and factorial plots are employed to determine the contribution of important parameters. Later, the optimal values for the best cutting conditions are proposed for industrial production using the formulated mathematical model. Finally, this paper documents the analysis and tasks performed that reduced cycle time which resulted in increased productivity and also in annual savings.

Abstract: The intuitive background for measures of structural centrality in social networks is reviewed and existing measures are evaluated in terms of their consistency with intuitions and their interpretability. Three distinct intuitive conceptions of centrality are uncovered and existing measures are refined to embody these conceptions. Three measures are developed for each concept, one absolute and one relative measure of the centrality of positions in a network, and one reflecting the degree of centralization of the entire network. The implications of these measures for the experimental study of small groups is examined.
