Reproduction of Mucohaemorrhagic Diarrhea and Colitis Indistinguishable from Swine Dysentery following Experimental Inoculation with “Brachyspira hampsonii” Strain 30446

TL;DR: “Brachyspira hampsonii” strain 30446 causes mucohaemorrhagic diarrhea in pigs following a 4–9 day incubation period, and culture and 30446-specific qPCR are reliable methods of detection of this organism in feces and tissues of diarrheic pigs.
Journal ArticleDOI

The use of quantitative PCR for identification and quantification of Brachyspira pilosicoli, Lawsonia intracellularis and Escherichia coli fimbrial types F4 and F18 in pig feces.

TL;DR: The qPCR assay for Lawsonia was found to be more sensitive than cultivation for E. coli and B. pilosicoli and the parallel simultaneous analysis for several bacteria in multi-qPCR and the determination of the quantities of the infectious agents increases the information obtained from the samples and the chance for obtaining a relevant diagnosis.
Journal ArticleDOI

Complete genome sequence of Brachyspira intermedia reveals unique genomic features in Brachyspira species and phage-mediated horizontal gene transfer

TL;DR: Evidence that bacteriophages were being remodeled and genes incorporated into them within the Brachyspira genomes is found, and a mechanism for horizontal gene transfer appears to be gene translocations leading to remodeling of bacter iophages in combination with broad tropism.
Journal ArticleDOI

Characterization and recognition of Brachyspira hampsonii sp. Nov., a novel intestinal spirochete that is pathogenic to pigs

TL;DR: B. hampsonii is classified as a unique species with genetically diverse yet phenotypically similar genomovars (I, II, and III) and the type strain NSH-16 (= ATCC BAA-2463 = NCTC 13792).

Pathological, Immunohistochemical, and In-situ Hybridization Studies of Natural Cases of Postweaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome (PMWS) in Pigs

TL;DR: Fifteen pigs from five farms on which there had been a previous clinical and histopathological diagnosis of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) were investigated, and lymphoid lesions were suggestive of immunosuppression.
Journal ArticleDOI

Amplification of the ZFY and ZFX genes for sex identification in humans, cattle, sheep and goats.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used universal primers to amplify 447 or 445 bp fragments from male or female genomic DNA corresponding to the ZFY or ZFX genes and found specific banding patterns between the two sexes in these species.
Journal ArticleDOI

Autoclaved liquid medium for propagation of Treponema hyodysenteriae.

TL;DR: Three liquid media that differ slightly in composition but not in the method of preparation were developed for the propagation of TrePonema hyodysenteriae and Treponema innocens and supported better growth of T. hyodysteriae than did previously used liquid media.
