TL;DR: In this article, a system and method for observing and controlling a programmable network via higher layer attributes is described, which includes one or more collectors, a network manager, and a PN element.
Abstract: A system and method for observing and controlling a programmable network via higher layer attributes is disclosed. According to one embodiment, the system includes one or more collectors, a network manager, and a programmable network element. The one or more collectors are configured to receive network traffic data from a plurality of network elements and extract metadata from the network traffic data. The network manager is configured to receive metadata from the one or more collectors. The network manager identifies a network control objective for the network, identifies a programmable parameter of the programmable network element to achieve the network control objective, and programs the programmable network element. The network manager further determines whether the network control objective is met after programming the programmable network element and applies a control loop based on the network control objective to program the programmable network element.

Abstract: An active response network tap for use in monitoring a network comprises a first device interface terminal, a second device interface terminal, a first monitor interface terminal, and a second monitor interface terminal. A tap structure is coupled to the first device interface terminal, second device interface terminal, first monitor interface terminal and second monitor interface terminal. A memory is coupled to the tap structure and configured to store data. In one aspect, the tap structure is configured to communicate full-duplex traffic between the tap structure and a monitor device coupled to a monitor interface terminal. In another aspect, the tap structure is configured to insert data from a monitor coupled to the first monitor interface into the traffic between the first device and the second device. Advantages of the invention include the ability to provide monitor access to a network while also supporting communication with other network devices.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed an improved apparatus for a radio communication system having a multiplicity of mobile transceiver units selectively in communication with a plurality of base transceivers which, in turn, communicate with one or more host computers for storage and manipulation of data collected by bar code scanners.
Abstract: Improved apparatus for a radio communication system having a multiplicity of mobile transceiver units selectively in communication with a plurality of base transceiver units which, in turn, communicate with one or more host computers for storage and manipulation of data collected by bar code scanners or other collection means associated with the mobile transceiver units. A network controller and an adapter which has a simulcast and sequential mode provide selective interface between host computers and base transceivers. A scheme for routing data through the communication system is also disclosed wherein the intermediate base stations are organized into an optimal spanning-tree network to control the routing of data to and from the RF terminals and the host computer efficiently and dynamically. Additionally, redundant network and communication protocol is disclosed wherein the network utilizes a polling communication protocol which, under heavy loaded conditions, requires that a roaming terminal wishing to initiate communication must first determine that the channel is truly clear by listing for an entire interpoll gap time. In a further embodiment, a criterion used by the roaming terminals for attaching to a given base station reduces conflicts in the overlapping RF regions of adjacent base stations.

TL;DR: In this paper, a field programmable gate array (FPGA) consisting of routing and logic blocks (RLBs) and segmented routing channels is described, where each RLB is configurable to perform both logic functions and routing functions.
Abstract: A field programmable gate array (FPGA) comprising routing and logic blocks (RLBs) and segmented routing channels is disclosed. Each RLB is configurable to perform both logic functions and routing functions. A plurality of forwardly propagating RLBs (FPRLBs) and a plurality of backwardly propagating RLBs (BPRLBs) intermesh with one another to form a two-dimensional checkerboard array. Each column of the RLB array comprises a plurality of FPRLBs and BPRLBs in alternating sequence. Similarly, each row of the RLB array comprises a plurality of FPRLBs and BPRLBs in alternating sequence. The FPRLBs forwardly propagate signals and the BPRLBs backwardly propagate signals. Each FPRLB may receive a plurality of input signals from a plurality of FPRLBs in the preceding leftward column. Moreover, each FPRLB may output a plurality of output signals to a plurality of FPRLBs in the next rightward column. Similarly, each BPRLB may receive a plurality of input signals from a plurality of BPRLBs in the preceding rightward column and transmit a plurality of output signals to a plurality of BPRLBs in the next leftward column. A plurality of vertical segmented routing channels are disposed between the columns of RLBs, the vertical segmented routing channels accessible to the input and output of adjacent columns of RLBs.

TL;DR: In this article, a system and method is presented for analyzing information in a communication line for unwanted intrusions and for allowing information to be transmitted back into the communication line without disrupting the communication traffic when an intrusion is detected.
Abstract: A system and method is presented for analyzing information in a communication line for unwanted intrusions and for allowing information to be transmitted back into the communication line without disrupting the communication traffic when an intrusion is detected. The system and method includes a security tap connected to a firewall. The security tap is also connected to an intrusion detection device. The intrusion detection device analyzes the information in the communication line for indicia of attempts to compromise the network. When such indicia is detected, the intrusion detection device sends a “kill” data packet back through the security tap and directed back to the communication line to the firewall to instruct the firewall to prevent further communications into the network by the intrusive source. An Ethernet switch or field programmable gate array (FPGA) is incorporated in the security tap to coordinate the transmission of the “kill” data packet to avoid data collisions with data transmissions already existing in the communication line.
