TL;DR: An overview of significant progress in the development of MNP/MOF composites, including various preparation strategies and characterization methods as well as catalytic applications is provided, with special emphasis on synergistic effects between the two components that result in an enhanced performance in heterogeneous catalysis.
Abstract: Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), established as a relatively new class of crystalline porous materials with high surface area, structural diversity, and tailorability, attract extensive interest and exhibit a variety of applications, especially in catalysis. Their permanent porosity enables their inherent superiority in confining guest species, particularly small metal nanoparticles (MNPs), for improved catalytic performance and/or the expansion of reaction scope. This is a rapidly developing interdisciplinary research field. In this review, we provide an overview of significant progress in the development of MNP/MOF composites, including various preparation strategies and characterization methods as well as catalytic applications. Special emphasis is placed on synergistic effects between the two components that result in an enhanced performance in heterogeneous catalysis. Finally, the prospects of MNP/MOF composites in catalysis and remaining issues in this field have been indicated.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reviewed the development of bifunctional catalysts that are active for both the hydrogen evolution reaction and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key factor in enhancing electrochemical water splitting activity and simplifying the overall system design.
Abstract: Production of hydrogen by water splitting is an appealing solution for sustainable energy storage. Development of bifunctional catalysts that are active for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key factor in enhancing electrochemical water splitting activity and simplifying the overall system design. Here, recent developments in HER–OER bifunctional catalysts are reviewed. Several main types of bifunctional water splitting catalysts such as cobalt-, nickel- and iron-based materials are discussed in detail. Particular attention is paid to their synthesis, bifunctional catalytic activity and stability, and strategies for activity enhancement. The current challenges faced are also concluded and future perspectives towards bifunctional water splitting electrocatalysts are proposed.

TL;DR: In this article, a controllable vacuum-diffusion method for gradual phosphidation of carbon coated metallic Co nanoparticles into Co/CoP Janus nanoparticles is reported, which exhibits excellent hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction performance in various electrolytes across wide pH range along with high durability.
Abstract: A controllable vacuum-diffusion method for gradual phosphidation of carbon coated metallic Co nanoparticles into Co/CoP Janus nanoparticles is reported. Janus Co/CoP nanoparticles, as typical Mott–Schottky electrocatalysts, exhibit excellent hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction performance in various electrolytes across wide pH range along with high durability. The Mott–Schottky Co/CoP catalyst can work as bifunctional electrode materials for overall water splitting in wide pH range and can achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in neutral electrolyte at only 1.51 V.
