TL;DR: This paper presents an optimal algorithm for mapping each anycasting query from clients into the one "best" video distribution server of replicas, such as Video-On-Demand servers on the Internet.
Abstract: In the Internet, a group of replicated servers is commonly used in order to improve the scalability of a networked service. An anycasting service is the new network service that resolves an anycast address to one its member IP address from the group. The anycasting service uses some criteria to choose the one "best" server as a destination. In this paper we will present an optimal algorithm for mapping each anycasting query from clients into the one "best" video distribution server of replicas, such as Video-On-Demand servers on the Internet. The algorithm is developed at application-layer of the network based on economic models and queuing theory. By using this algorithm clients can get maximal satisfaction while system resources can be utilized most efficiently.

TL;DR: This article shows that exposing and using detailed information about how clients use Internet services enables mechanisms that achieve two interconnected goals: providing improved QoS to the service clients, and optimizing server resource utilization.
Abstract: It is often difficult to tune the performance of modern component-based Internet services because: (1) component middleware are complex software systems that expose several independently tuned server resource management mechanisms; (2) session-oriented client behavior with complex data access patterns makes it hard to predict what impact tuning these mechanisms has on application behavior; and (3) component-based Internet services themselves exhibit complex structural organization with requests of different types having widely ranging execution complexity. In this article we show that exposing and using detailed information about how clients use Internet services enables mechanisms that achieve two interconnected goals: (1) providing improved QoS to the service clients, and (2) optimizing server resource utilization. To differentiate among levels of service usage (service access) information, we introduce the notion of the service access attribute and identify four related groups of service access attributes, encompassing different aspects of service usage information, ranging from the high-level structure of client web sessions to low-level fine-grained information about utilization of server resources by different requests. To show how the identified service usage information can be collected, we implement a request profiling infrastructure in the JBoss Java application server. In the context of four representative service management problems, we show how collected service usage information is used to improve service performance, optimize server resource utilization, or to achieve other problem-specific service management goals.

TL;DR: The objective of this paper is to present an integrated investment model that can be used to explore retailers' behaviors in competitive, dynamic markets and confirm the impression that the small discount retailer invests earlier in a new developing market.
Abstract: The proliferation of retail outlets with nearly identical product offerings and similar costs due to market efficiency means that selecting an appropriate market to open a store is a critical decision for a retailer. It is an investment decision that is usually long- term and partially irreversible and can have a significant impact on market share and profitability of a retailer. In this paper, we look at retail market analysis from a theoretical investment perspective to overcome some of the limitations of marketing research. The objective of this paper is to present an integrated investment model that can be used to explore retailers' behaviors in competitive, dynamic markets. By use of this option-based model the impression that the small discount retailer invests earlier in a new developing market is confirmed.

TL;DR: Evaluated empirically whether the level of intervention moderates the effects of knowledge and perceived usefulness on performance in structured and proceduralized environments shows that the degree of automation moderates the direct relationships.
Abstract: Organizations require good performance from individuals to achieve their objectives. In view of the growing presence of technology, it becomes necessary to understand performance in the context of information systems. Previous research shows that knowledge and perceived usefulness factors have direct effects on performance. However, the literature also recognizes that there may be different man–machine arrangements to carry out the tasks (level of automation). This study, using a multi-disciplinary approach, evaluates empirically whether the level of intervention moderates the effects of knowledge and perceived usefulness on performance. A questionnaire was used to collect data from 201 users in different organizations and different functional areas. The structural equations model was used for analysis. The results show that the degree of automation moderates the direct relationships. Thus, in structured and proceduralized environments, at high levels of automation, the relevance of knowledge of the task may decrease, and at low levels of intervention, the relevance of perceived usefulness may fall.
