TL;DR: In this paper, a cross-sectional analysis of transit use in 265 urbanized areas was conducted, and the authors found that most of the variation in transit ridership can be explained by the size (population and area) of the metropolitan area, the vitality of the regional economy (median housing costs), and the share of the population with low levels of private vehicle access (carless households).
