Intermediate microeconomics : A modern approach

01 Jan 2006-
TL;DR: The Varian approach as mentioned in this paper gives students tools they can use on exams, in the rest of their classes, and in their careers after graduation, and is still the most modern presentation of the subject.
Abstract: This best-selling text is still the most modern presentation of the subject. The Varian approach gives students tools they can use on exams, in the rest of their classes, and in their careers after graduation.

TL;DR: In this article, a stochastic Markov process (MP) model is used to capture various factors that influence the utility value and uncertainties associated with them, and the MP-based mechanism enables a contractor to choose different optimal payments depending on the payment(s) of other contractors or contractees' costs of doing the task, and therefore to receive a better profit.
Abstract: Forming a contract among self-interested agents often requires complex, strategic thinking For instance, a self-interested agent (contractee) will perform a task for anothe~ agent (contractor) only when doing it is in its own interest Therefore, to form a successful conwact, the conwactor needs to provide incentives to the contractee, such as proposing a payment higher than the contractee’s cost of doing the task In this paper, we focus on the contractor’s strategic decision problem of what payment to offer to maximize its expected utility, and propose a method for a self-interested contractor to determine the best payment to offer We present a four-step decision-making mechanism using a stochastic Markov-process (MP) model, which captures various factors that influence the utility value and uncertainties associated with them The MP-based mechanism enables a contractor to choose different optimal payments depending on the payment(s) of the other contractor(s) or contractees’ costs of doing the task, and therefore to receive a better profit Our experiments demonstrate that strategic thinking--thinking about not only oneself but also the contractees and the other competing contractors--is indeed advantageous

TL;DR: In this article, the wear resistance and feasibility of applying soil rippers have been studied after surfacing for use in the clayey soil, and it is shown that hard-alloy tips of rippers are better suited for clay-like soil, which is the toughest to cultivate.
Abstract: The wear resistance and feasibility of applying soil rippers have been studied after surfacing for use in the clayey soil. The study illustrates laboratory and production research of standard and novel (with large grain tungsten carbide) material for manual electric arc surfacing. Hardness and wear resistance in the clayey soil have been determined. Rippers (and the components of soil cultivating machinery yield the least wear by using wear-resistant materials and the comprehensive surfacing of tailing and lateral surfaces. It is shown that hard-alloy tips of rippers are better suited for clayey soil, which is the toughest to cultivate. The best wear resistance in clayey soil is found in hard-alloyed layers of Fe-C-Cr-Si-Mo-Nb-W and Fe-C-Mn-B alloys. The wear rate depends on the depth of cultivation and varies exponentially.

TL;DR: It is shown that a marked improvement in application performance is possible by monitoring the available networks, and making the appropriate selection of networks, by a modified version of SCTP.
Abstract: It is likely that an ensemble of overlapping heterogeneous wireless networks will be required to provide ubiquitous data communications. In this scenario, the mobile user's choice of network will directly affect the applications' performance. The paper examines this decision, and proposes that it is made by the client application by considering network characteristics and cost. This is facilitated by a modified version of SCTP (stream control transmission protocol). Using simulation results, we show that a marked improvement in application performance is possible by monitoring the available networks, and making the appropriate selection.
