Abstract: This article describes how it could be possible for two participants engaged in conversation to jointly produce a single syntactic unit such as a sentence. From an inspection of sentence types that are achieved through such joint production, it was determined that participants have available a single utterance construction format. This format, the compound turn-constructional unit format, may be a component of a socially construed syntax-for-conversation. It can be constituted by a wide range of interactionally relevant features of talk in interaction that reveal an emerging utterance as a multiple component turn-constructional unit. The compound turn-constructional unit format is primarily a resource for turn-taking. It can be used to project the next proper place for speaker change. However, it concomitantly provides the resources needed to complete the utterance-in-progress of another participant, thus allowing for the construction of a single sentence across the talk of two speakers. Abstract: This book articulates a theory of learning based on learning research and translates that theory into a model of classroom instruction. This model is based on the assumption that the process of learning involves the interaction of five types, or dimensions of thinking, which are loose metaphors for the way the mind works during learning. These dimensions are: (1) developing positive attitudes and perceptions about learning; (2) acquiring and integrating knowledge; (3) extending and refining knowledge; (4) using knowledge meaningfully; and (5) developing productive habits of mind. The first six of the book's seven chapters describe ways for classroom teachers to foster these dimensions of learning in their students; offer suggestions for planning instruction that addresses each dimension of learning; and discuss topics with practical relevance to each dimension of learning. The final chapter proposes three models for integrating the five dimensions in classroom instruction and discusses the assessment of instructional methods that are based on the dimensions of learning. Abstract: where same was Sarah's plastic symbol for \"same.\" Sarah solved analogy problems with two types of displays: (a) forced choice, in which she had to complete an analogy by choosing the correct B' from a set of alternatives (Experiments I A , In , and 3A) and (b) same-different, in which she had to complete an analogy by choosing the correct predicate, Same or Different (Experiments 2 and JB). In addition, she correctly solved both figural analogy problems, in which the stimuli were geometric figures and the relations among them were differences in size, color, or marking (Experiments I A , I n , and 2), and conceptual analogy problems, in which the stimuli were household objects and the relations were functional and spatial (Experiments 3A and 3n). Simple mechanisms for problem solution, e.g., physical matching, feature combination, and choice on the basis of association, were ruled out. The data strongly indicate that Sarah used the relation between A and A' to solve the analogy problems (Experiment IB). The implications for theories of human and animal cognition are discussed.
