Sources of core and intact branched tetraether membrane lipids in the lacustrine environment: Anatomy of Lake Challa and its catchment, equatorial East Africa
TL;DR: In this article, a 3-year time series of approximately monthly samples of settling particles, supplemented with a depth profile of suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sets of profundal surface-sediment and catchment soil samples, were analysed for both the intact polar lipids (IPLs) and fossil core lipids of GDGTs.
Simulated Global Response to a Substantial Weakening of the Atlantic Thermohaline Circulation
R. Zhang,T. L. Delworth +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a mechanism is demonstrated whereby a large reduction in the Atlantic thermohaline circulation (THC) can induce global-scale changes in the Tropics that are consistent with paleo evidence of the global synchronization of millennial-scale abrupt climate change.

High-resolution 14C dating of a 25,000-year lake-sediment record from equatorial East Africa
Maarten Blaauw,Bas van Geel,I. Kristen,Birgit Plessen,Anna Lyaruu,Daniel R. Engstrom,Johannes van der Plicht,Johannes van der Plicht,Dirk Verschuren +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, a continuous, ∼22m long sediment sequence from Lake Challa (Mt. Kilimanjaro area, Kenya/Tanzania) was used to produce a solid chronological framework for multi-proxy reconstructions of climate and environmental change in equatorial East Africa over the past 25,000 years, based on a total of 168 AMS 14 C dates on bulk organic matter, combined with a 210 Pb chronology for recent sediments and corrected for a variable old-carbon age offset.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dissolution of titanomagnetite and sulphidization in sediments from Lake Kinneret, Israel
TL;DR: Magnetic extracts obtained from sediment cores recovered from Lake Kinneret, Israel, were subjected to comprehensive scanning electron microscope and in-line energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses.
Journal ArticleDOI
Carbon cycling within an East African lake revealed by the carbon isotope composition of diatom silica: a 25-ka record from Lake Challa, Mt. Kilimanjaro
Philip A. Barker,Elizabeth R. Hurrell,Melanie J. Leng,Melanie J. Leng,Birgit Plessen,Christian Wolff,Daniel J. Conley,Eddy Keppens,Isla Milne,Brian F. Cumming,Kathleen R. Laird,Christopher P. Kendrick,Peter M. Wynn,Dirk Verschuren +13 more
TL;DR: In this article, a 25,000-year record of δ13Cdiatom from the sediments of crater Lake Challa on the eastern flank of Mt. Kilimanjaro is presented, along with other proxy data.

Trends, Rhythms, and Aberrations in Global Climate 65 Ma to Present
TL;DR: This work focuses primarily on the periodic and anomalous components of variability over the early portion of this era, as constrained by the latest generation of deep-sea isotope records.
Climate and atmospheric history of the past 420,000 years from the Vostok ice core, Antarctica
J. R. Petit,Jean Jouzel,Dominique Raynaud,J. M. Barnola,I. Basile,Michael L. Bender,Jérôme Chappellaz,Michael Davis,Gilles Delaygue,Marc Delmotte,V. M. Kotlyakov,Michel Legrand,Vladimir Ya. Lipenkov,C. Lorius,L. Pepin,Catherine Ritz,Eric S. Saltzman,Michel Stievenard +17 more
TL;DR: The recent completion of drilling at Vostok station in East Antarctica has allowed the extension of the ice record of atmospheric composition and climate to the past four glacial-interglacial cycles.

A Dipole Mode in the Tropical Indian Ocean
TL;DR: An analysis of observational data over the past 40 years shows a dipole mode in the Indian Ocean: a pattern of internal variability with anomalously low sea surface temperatures off Sumatra and high seasurface temperatures in the western Indian Ocean, with accompanying wind and precipitation anomalies.

Evidence for general instability of past climate from a 250-kyr ice-core record
Willi Dansgaard,Sigfus J Johnsen,Sigfus J Johnsen,Henrik Clausen,Dorthe Dahl-Jensen,Niels S. Gundestrup,Claus U. Hammer,Christine S. Hvidberg,Jørgen Peder Steffensen,Arny E. Sveinbjörnsdottir,Jean Jouzel,Gerard C. Bond +11 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a detailed stable isotope record for the full length of the Greenland Ice-core Project Summit ice core, extending over the past 250 kyr according to a calculated timescale, and find that climate instability was not confined to the last glaciation, but appears also have been marked during the last interglacial (as explored more fully in a companion paper), and during the previous Saale-Holstein glacial cycle.
