TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the impact of this apparent paradox on the direction of Islam according to Quranic verses, and the interpretation of Jihad that the writer intends to explore best fits the religion which in its nature is peace and salvation.
Abstract: The word Islam as a verbal form is derived from the infinitive Arabic trilateral root of silm, salamet (peace and security). Therefore, if its nature has been peace and salvation, how can we interpret Jihad verses? The subject of this article focuses on this point. In this article, the writer discusses the subject and the impact of this apparent paradox on the direction of Islam according to Quranic verses. The interpretation of Jihad that the writer intends to explore best fits the religion which in its nature is peace and

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focused on the discourse about the meaning of Jihad that emerged in the Muhammadiyah circle as one of the Islamic Organizations in Indonesia and used Ricoeur's interpretation of the text based on the distinction between the text and the reader.
Abstract: This study focuses on the discourse about the meaning of Jihad that emerged in the Muhammadiyah circle as one of the Islamic Organizations in Indonesia. The discussion of meaning of Jihad as a way of peace or a way of war becomes crucial amid radicalism, terrorism, violence movements and chaos waged on behalf of religion. However, Muhammadiyah believes that the meaning of Jihad is anti-war and anti-violence which strengthens the understanding of Islam as the religion of rahmatan lil alamin (a mercy to all creation). This belief is criticism and contra-discourse towards camps that perceive Jihad as war and acts of violence. This study uses Paul Ricoeur's Interpretation Theory and focuses on the interpretation of the text based on the distinction between the text and the reader. The method is Ricoeur's hermeneutic method which focuses on the distortion of language, discourse, and textuality. The study shows that textually the meaning of Jihad among the Muhammadiyah circle is jihad lil-muwajahah, or the struggle to tackle a challenge by creating a superior movement, for example, “Jihad Konstitusi.” Muhammadiyah's understanding of the meaning of Jihad can be used as a counter-discourse on the meaning of Jihad which well known as an act of terrorism.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the compatibility between International Humanitarian Law and the Islamic concept of Jihad, and made an assessment about the compatibility of international humanitarian law with Islam.
Abstract: This study investigates the matter of the compatibility between International Humanitarian Law and Islamic concept of Jihad. The proponents of the theory of the acceptability of International Humanitarian Law in an Islamic context have been presenting the similarities between International Humanitarian Law and Islam. The opponents have been trying to point out the differences between International Humanitarian Law and Islam, especially on the violent concept of Jihad. This study looks at the theories of the existence or non-existence of a fundamental conflict between International Humanitarian Law and Islam by analysing the views of different schools of thoughts and rules of International Humanitarian Law in the context of Islamic Law of War (Jihad). The lack of the availability of a satisfactory study on the matter provides justification for the present study that aims to address the gap by making an important contribution to the knowledge in this area. The data for this study has been collected by using both primary and secondary sources of data collection. The primary data has been collected through this study. The available literature on the same topic has been collected as secondary data through libraries, books, journals, articles and using the internet sources. The analyses of the data lead us to the point where the relationship between International Humanitarian Law and Islam becomes clear and an assessment is made about the compatibility of International Humanitarian Law with Islam, on the Islamic concept of Jihad, that rejects the existence of a fundamental conflict between International Humanitarian Law and Islam.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors posits that violent Islamism purports to have a solution which is to totally rearrange the social, economic, and political structures of the society, Islamise the knowledge and civil and economic institutions, and establishment the Caliphate with shari'ah as its constitution.
Abstract: Violent Islamism is a modern sociological phenomenon with origins in the crisis of society and the negative consequences of modernity. It sees the society and the modern world steeped in a quagmire with an obscene level of wealth and power in the hands of a few and a large section of society in perpetual strife and suffering. Apart from the West in various other parts of the world there is economic stagnation, many in the society are excluding from resources revenue, and the trade and social networks being disrupted and societies torn apart with the creation of new nation states. The society has huge urban agglomerations and people in millions, especially young men and women, are either unemployed or underemployed and many feel alienated from prosperous way of life enjoyed by the urban elite and uprooted from the social fabric of the society where sense of solidarity has been pilfered away. The crisis needs to be addressed and the imbalance corrected immediately. This paper posits that violent Islamism purports to have a solution which is to totally rearrange the social, economic, and political structures of the society, Islamise the knowledge and civil and economic institutions, and establishment the Caliphate with shari'ah as its constitution. Violent Islamists are only too willing and ready to remake the world and will use any means to achieve this goal even defensive and offensive jihad as a weapon of choice.
