Knowledge of and attitudes towards evidence-based practice among midwives taking a specialty examination organized by center of postgraduate education for nurses and midwives

Abstract: The improvement of professional qualifications and participation in continuing education on the basis of the most recent study results constitute a precondition to ensure efficient and safe health services and to provide maternity care of the highest quality and efficiency. Aim The study aimed to assess knowledge of, attitudes towards, and skills of using Evidence – Based Practice (EBP) among midwives after completing a specialized training organized by the Center of Postgraduate Education for Nurses and Midwives (CKPPiP). Materials and Methods 48 midwives taking part in the CKPPiP specialty examination in the summer 2014 session; mean age of 47.57 years (min. 32, max. 60, SD=6.502); mean length of service was 28.07 years (min. 7, max. 38, SD=6.494). 93.75% of the total worked full-time in a public hospital, 56.25% of all worked as senior midwives. 52.08% of the study participants had secondary education. Standardized Evidence–Based Practice Profile Questionnaire from the University of South Australia, quantative analysis of the study results. Reliability analysis: Cronbach's α coefficient, STATISTICA 12. Results Reliability analysis for particular domains: Cronbach's α coefficient was between 0.882 and 0.975. As many as 66.6% of the midwives were aware of the importance and development of EBP in midwifery and the benefits resulting from using EBP. 37.5% of the study participants have never evaluated the methodological soundness of the scientific literature they had been using and have not referred it to their own diagnosis (20.8%). As many as 39.5% of all have never met the term of "systematic review". 56.2% of the study group said that they knew how to search for information in electronic databases of scientific literature and used them once a month (31.2%). Despite using EBP in making proper clinical decisions in their professional practice, midwives valued their own clinical experience more than study results (62.5%). Conclusions 1 Since the level of knowledge of using Evidence-Based Practice among midwives who completed a specialisation programme is clearly insufficient, knowledge and skills of midwives with respect to this issue need to be urgently supplemented. 2 In order to improve the current level of knowledge of EBP among midwives, it is advisable to offer them further training and enhance their skills concerning methodology of research. 3 It is necessary for midwives to continuously update their knowledge of using the most recent study results in their professional practice.

The aim of the study was to investigate Swedish university nursing students’ experience of educational support for research utilization and capability beliefs regarding evidence-based practice skills. Background. Nursing programmes are offered at 26 universities in Sweden and even though there are common regulations for nursing education at the national level, substantial variations are found in local curricula. Little is known about students’ capability beliefs regarding evidence-based practice skills, particularly in comparison across universities. Methods. A cross-sectional survey design using self-administered postal questionnaires was conducted in 2006. A total of 1440 students (from 26 different universities) participated, constituting 68% of the national population of nursing students in their 6th and final semester. Results. Campus education supported the students to a greater extent than clinical education in following the development of knowledge in an area of interest, using research findings, and acquiring knowledge on how to pursue changes in clinical practice. Perceived support during campus education varied between universities. Students reported high capability beliefs regarding evidence-based practice skills, but large differences were found between universities for: stating a searchable question, seeking out relevant knowledge and critically appraising and compiling best knowledge. Conclusion. The identified differences between universities concerning the students’ perceived support for research utilization and their capability beliefs regarding evidence-based practice skills have implications for curricula, pedagogical perspectives in nursing education and the potential to implement evidence-based practice in healthcare settings. Further studies are warranted to investigate students’ individual characteristics and organizational characteristics as determinants of research utilization support and capability beliefs regarding evidence-based practice skills.

Abstract: Most previous studies of allied health professionals' evidence based practice (EBP) attitudes, knowledge and behaviours have been conducted with profession specific questionnaires of variable psychometric strength. This study compared the self-report EBP profiles of allied health professionals/trainees in an Australian university. The Evidence-Based Practice Profile (EBP2) questionnaire assessed five domains (Relevance, Terminology, Practice, Confidence, Sympathy) in 918 subjects from five professional disciplines. One and 2-way factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) and t-tests analysed differences based on prior exposure to EBP, stage of training, professional discipline, age and gender. There were significant differences between stages of training (p 24 years) scored higher for all domains (p < 0.05). Age and exposure affected all domains (p < 0.02). Differences in stages of training largely explained age-related differences in Confidence and Practice (p ≤ 0.001) and exposure-related differences in Confidence, Practice and Sympathy (p ≤ 0.023). Across five allied health professions, self-report EBP characteristics varied with EBP exposure, across stages of training, with profession and with age.

Abstract: 2 Abstract To adopt an evidence-based approach to education there is a need for research-based evidence to support its effectiveness. This study investigated the impact of evidence-based education on the knowledge and attitude of nursing students. In this quasi-experimental study, all nursing students (n = 41) studying the courses of musculoskeletal and gastrointestinal systems were chosen and assigned randomly to intervention and control groups. The groups were taught through an evidence-based or traditional approach. Students' knowledge and attitude were then evaluated. Data were gathered by three knowledge and two attitude questionnaires with multiple choice and Likert scales and then analyzed. It was shown that there was a significant difference between the average scores for attitude of the groups, but there was no statistically significant difference between the average scores of knowledge. The results suggest the evidence-based approach might be used as a complementary approach to nursing education. It was not only as effective as the usual method but also led to the acquisition of particular skills by students. The results can be used to formulate programs to design and implement evidence-based nursing education.
