Laminar Mixed Convection in a Lid-Driven Square Cavity with Two Isothermally Heated Square Internal Blockages

TL;DR: In this article, a lid-driven square cavity with two isothermally heated square internal blockages is numerically investigated and the flow and heat transfer behavior is studied for various placements of the blockages through analyzing the local Nusselt number distribution.
Abstract: Laminar mixed convection in a lid-driven square cavity with two isothermally heated square internal blockages is numerically investigated. The top lid of the cavity is moving rightwards with a constant speed. The two blockages are maintained at an isothermal hot temperature, while the walls of the cavity are maintained at a cold temperature. The flow and heat transfer behavior is studied for various placements of the blockages through analyzing the local Nusselt number distribution around the edges of the blockages and the average Nusselt number at the blockage surfaces at various Richardson and Reynolds numbers. Investigations are performed in a range of Reynolds number (100–500), Richardson number (0.1–10), and at a fixed Prandtl number (0.71). Computations are done using the ANSYS FLUENT commercial code based on a finite volume method. It is observed that, the average Nusselt number on the blockage surfaces increases with increasing Reynolds number at any Richardson number. The average Nusselt number c...

TL;DR: In this article, a study of double-diffusive natural convection in a trapezoidal enclosure with a partial heated active right sidewall has been conducted numerically using the finite difference method.
Abstract: A study of double-diffusive natural convection in a trapezoidal enclosure with a partial heated active right sidewall has been conducted numerically using the finite difference method. The length of the heated active part is equal to half of the inclined wall. Uniform different temperatures and concentrations are imposed along the active parts of the enclosure. The top and bottom boundaries of the enclosure, as well as inactive part of the right sidewall, are being insulated and impermeable. The species diffusivity of the fluid is considered to be constant, but the density varies linearly with the temperature and concentration. Double-diffusive convection for laminar two-dimensional incompressible flow with negligible radiation is expressed in terms of vorticity, temperature or energy, concentration and stream function. A Partial Differential Equation (PDE) technique is adopted to generate regular grid distribution in the physical space. The numerical results are reported for the effect of different heating cases, thermal Grashof numbers, and inclination angles on the contours of streamline, temperature, and concentration. Also, the relevant results for the average Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are demonstrated for several parameters including thermal Grashof number ( 10 3 ⩽ Gr T ⩽ 10 6 ) , Lewis number ( 0.5 ⩽ Le ⩽ 10 ) , Prandtl number ( 0.7 ⩽ Pr ⩽ 10 ) at a fixed aspect ratio Ar = 1 and buoyancy ratio N = - 0.2 .

TL;DR: In this article, a review of the body of work dealing with internal recirculating flows generated by the motion of one or more of the containing walls is presented. But the use of direct numerical simulation appears very promising.
Abstract: This review pertains to the body of work dealing with internal recirculating flows generated by the motion of one or more of the containing walls. These flows are not only technologically important, they are of great scientific interest because they display almost all fluid mechanical phenomena in the simplest of geometrical settings. Thus corner eddies, longitudinal vortices, nonuniqueness, transition, and turbulence all occur naturally and can be studied in the same closed geometry. This facilitates the comparison of results from experiment, analysis, and computation over the whole range of Reynolds numbers. Considerable progress has been made in recent years in the understanding of three-dimensional flows and in the study of turbulence. The use of direct numerical simulation appears very promising.
