Abstract: Resumo O modo como a transferencia metalica ocorre na soldagem MIG/MAG influencia diretamente na produtividade e estabilidade do processo, assim como, nos aspectos geometricos do cordao de solda. O presente trabalho avaliou o uso do carbonato de calcio e do dioxido de silicio como fluxos na soldagem A-MIG do aco inoxidavel austenitico AISI 304L. Foi avaliada a influencia desses fluxos em aspectos operacionais e no modo da transferencia metalica por voo livre. Para isto, foram realizadas soldagens com corrente constante variando entre 160 e 250 A com protecao de Ar-2,5% CO2 e controle do comprimento do arco por sua projecao e variacao da velocidade de alimentacao. Sinais eletricos de tensao e corrente foram adquiridos e analisados. Os resultados mostram uma atuacao ativa dos fluxos no processo. Com o uso do carbonato de calcio ocorreu reducao da tensao do arco e da frequencia de transferencia metalica, atrasando a transicao entre os modos globular e spray. De forma diversa, com a silica houve o aumento da tensao do arco e alteracao na transferencia metalica pouco significativa. Tais efeitos resultaram tambem em mudancas nos aspectos geometricos do cordao de solda como na morfologia, largura e penetracao.

Abstract: Single pass, autogenous flat butt welds were made on 6 mm thick duplex stainless steel (2205) plates using gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process. Four of the welding process parameters, i. e., arc current, welding speed, shielding gas flow rate and arc gap, were varied each at four levels and welding trials were conducted as per an L16 orthogonal array derived using the Taguchi methodology. Bead geometry parameters, depth of penetration and aspect ratio (width-to-depth ratio) were measured on polished and etched samples using microstructural image analysis. Tabulated results were subjected to analysis of variance and effects of each parameter on bead geometry were calculated. It has been found that welding current and welding speed are the dominant parameters determining the bead geometry. Gas flow rate also plays a key role in influencing the aspect ratio of the welds. Equations have been presented to predict depth of penetration and aspect ratio of the weld.
