Abstract: This tutorial reviews various noncontact optical sensing techniques that can be used to measure distances to objects, and related parameters such as displacements, surface profiles, velocities and vibrations. The techniques that are discussed and compared include intensity-based sensing, triangulation, time-of-flight sensing, confocal sensing, Doppler sensing, and various kinds of interferometric sensing with both high- and low-coherence sources.

Abstract: Machines without vibrations in the working environment are something non-existent. During machining operations, these vibrations are directly linked to problems in systems having rotating or reciprocating parts, such as bearings, engines, gear boxes, shafts, turbines and motors. Vibration analysis has proved to be a measure for any cause of inaccuracy in manufacturing processes and components or any maintenance decisions related to the machine. The non-contact measurement of vibration signal is very important for reliable structural health monitoring for quality assurance, optimizing profitability of products and services, to enhance manufacturing productivity and to reduce regular periodic inspections. This paper presents a state-of-the-art review of recent vibration monitoring methods and signal processing techniques for structural health monitoring in manufacturing operations. These methods and techniques are used as a tool to acquire, visualize and analyse the sampled data collected in any machining operation which can then be used for decision making about maintenance strategies.

Abstract: There has been a large volume of research on structural health monitoring since the 1970s but this research effort has yielded relatively few routine industrial applications. Structural health monitoring can include applications on very different structures with very different requirements; this article splits the subject into four broad categories: rotating machine condition monitoring, global monitoring of large structures (structural identification), large area monitoring where the area covered is part of a larger structure, and local monitoring. The capabilities and potential applications of techniques in each category are discussed. Condition monitoring of rotating machine components is very different to the other categories since it is not strictly concerned with structural health. Abstract: Acoustic actuation of fluids at small scales may finally enable a comprehensive lab-on-a-chip revolution in microfluidics, overcoming long-standing difficulties in fluid and particle manipulation on-chip. In this comprehensive review, we examine the fundamentals of piezoelectricity, piezoelectric materials, and transducers; revisit the basics of acoustofluidics; and give the reader a detailed look at recent technological advances and current scientific discussions in the discipline. Recent achievements are placed in the context of classic reports for the actuation of fluid and particles via acoustic waves, both within sessile drops and closed channels. Other aspects of micro/nano acoustofluidics are examined: atomization, translation, mixing, jetting, and particle manipulation in the context of sessile drops and fluid mixing and pumping, particle manipulation, and formation of droplets in the context of closed channels, plus the most recent results at the nanoscale. These achievements will enable applications across the disciplines of chemistry, biology, medicine, energy, manufacturing, and we suspect a number of others yet unimagined. Basic design concepts and illustrative applications are highlighted in each section, with an emphasis on lab-on-a-chip applications.

Abstract: This paper makes available a concise review of data windows and their affect on the detection of harmonic signals in the presence of broad-band noise, and in the presence of nearby strong harmonic interference. We also call attention to a number of common errors in the application of windows when used with the fast Fourier transform. This paper includes a comprehensive catalog of data windows along with their significant performance parameters from which the different windows can be compared. Finally, an example demonstrates the use and value of windows to resolve closely spaced harmonic signals characterized by large differences in amplitude.

Abstract: A review of recent experimental and theoretical results concerning laser diode self-mixing velocimetry is presented, showing that this technique can be deployed to measure velocity and vibration of solid targets with an extremely simple optical setup. This technique reduces optical alignment problems and achieves results comparable to those obtained by the conventional laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) approach. It is demonstrated that the self-mixing signal can be processed to recover the target velocity and vibration by applying the same analysis method used for LDV. An optimal signal processing method is then proposed to recover the target velocity with good accuracy, also in the presence of relevant speckle disturbance. Application to the measurement of sub-micron vibrations is also demonstrated, using a self-mixing vibrometer instrument capable of 5-nm accuracy. As an example, the characterization of response and hysteresis of piezoceramic transducers (PZTs) is carried out. These results illustrate the effectiveness of the self-mixing technique in the field of laser velocimetry, opening the way to new applications where compactness and low cost of the measuring apparatus are essential.
