TL;DR: In this paper, a working device applied in previous research is presented, with discussion on methodological decisions and suggestions on how to approach research on life stories, in light of the premises that underlie research from a biographical approach.
In social sciences research, the use of life stories has developed greatly allowing for the articulation of subjective meanings of social practices and experiences. There are several studies that show their fi ndings as there is a variety of such pieces of research that discuss this particular way of conceptually conceiving and articulating subjective and social dimensions. The literature has, however, avoided analyzing aspects of the process of design and implementation of research based on life stories. In this paper there is an attempt to bring these aspects to the forefront, in light of the premises that underlie research from a biographical approach. A working device applied in previous research is presented, with discussion on methodological decisions and suggestions on how to approach research on life stories.

TL;DR: This paper explored the fundamental tension between experience and teleology in major works of Greek and Roman historiography, biography and autobiography, and the combination of theoretical reflections with close readings yields a new, often surprising assessment of the history of ancient history.
Abstract: The past is narrated in retrospect. Historians can either capitalize on the benefit of hindsight and give their narratives a strongly teleological design or they may try to render the past as it was experienced by historical agents and contemporaries. This book explores the fundamental tension between experience and teleology in major works of Greek and Roman historiography, biography and autobiography. The combination of theoretical reflections with close readings yields a new, often surprising assessment of the history of ancient historiography as well as a deeper understanding of such authors as Thucydides, Tacitus and Augustine. While much recent work has focused on how ancient historians use emplotment to generate historical meaning, 'Experience and Teleology in Ancient Historiography' offers a new approach to narrative form as a mode of coming to grips with time.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a dialogue in which Margaretta's Voice asks general, if not straightforwardly generic questions about letters and Liz's Echo answers them in relation to her current two epistolary projects, theorizing 'the epistolarium', and editing a new Olive Schreiner collected letters for publication.
Abstract: With the rise of life writing studies, letters have become the subject of an increasing number of interdisciplinary analyses. The following essay ruminates on what common characteristics hold such analyses together and the peculiar difficulties they encounter in theorising a genre that perhaps, out of all writing practices, most exposes the limits of genre theory itself. The essay is written, appropriately, as a dialogue, in which Margaretta's Voice asks general, if not straightforwardly generic questions about letters and Liz's Echo answers them in relation to her current two epistolary projects, theorizing 'the epistolarium', and editing a new Olive Schreiner collected letters for publication. The echo here is a voice that, unlike most echoes, answers back in an argumentative way. While Margaretta suggests that letters are proto-genres whose distinctive yet infinitely malleable features can be best understood through the social and literary codes of relationship, Liz explains how, after her sce...
