TL;DR: In this article, several definitions of the Riesz fractional Laplace operator in R^d have been studied, including singular integrals, semigroups of operators, Bochner's subordination, and harmonic extensions.
Abstract: This article reviews several definitions of the fractional Laplace operator (-Delta)^{alpha/2} (0 < alpha < 2) in R^d, also known as the Riesz fractional derivative operator, as an operator on Lebesgue spaces L^p, on the space C_0 of continuous functions vanishing at infinity and on the space C_{bu} of bounded uniformly continuous functions. Among these definitions are ones involving singular integrals, semigroups of operators, Bochner's subordination and harmonic extensions. We collect and extend known results in order to prove that all these definitions agree: on each of the function spaces considered, the corresponding operators have common domain and they coincide on that common domain.

TL;DR: A closed formula for prices of perpetual American call options in terms of the overall supremum of the Lévy process, and a corresponding closed formulas for perpetual American put options involving the infimum of the after-mentioned process are obtained.
Abstract: Consider a model of a financial market with a stock driven by a Levy process and constant interest rate. A closed formula for prices of perpetual American call options in terms of the overall supremum of the Levy process, and a corresponding closed formula for perpetual American put options involving the infimum of the after-mentioned process are obtained. As a direct application of the previous results, a Black-Scholes type formula is given. Also as a consequence, simple explicit formulas for prices of call options are obtained for a Levy process with positive mixed-exponential and arbitrary negative jumps. In the case of put options, similar simple formulas are obtained under the condition of negative mixed-exponential and arbitrary positive jumps. Risk-neutral valuation is discussed and a simple jump-diffusion model is chosen to illustrate the results.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors review work on extreme events, their causes and consequences, by a group of European and American researchers involved in a three-year project on these topics.
Abstract: We review work on extreme events, their causes and consequences, by a group of European and American researchers involved in a three-year project on these topics. The review covers theoretical aspects of time series analysis and of extreme value theory, as well as of the deterministic modeling of extreme events, via continuous and discrete dynamic models. The applications include climatic, seismic and socio-economic events, along with their prediction. Two important results refer to (i) the complementarity of spectral analysis of a time series in terms of the continuous and the discrete part of its power spectrum; and (ii) the need for coupled modeling of natural and socio-economic systems. Both these results have implications for the study and prediction of natural hazards and their human impacts.

TL;DR: Dividend problem for an insurance company whose risk evolves as a spectrally negative Lévy process (in the absence of dividend payments) when a Parisian delay is applied is considered.
Abstract: In this paper we consider dividend problem for an insurance company whose risk evolves as a spectrally negative Levy process (in the absence of dividend payments) when Parisian delay is applied. The objective function is given by the cumulative discounted dividends received until the moment of ruin when so-called barrier strategy is applied. Additionally we will consider two possibilities of delay. In the first scenario ruin happens when the surplus process stays below zero longer than fixed amount of time $\zeta>0$. In the second case there is a time lag $d$ between decision of paying dividends and its implementation.

TL;DR: Stopping decisions in a model with Poisson bandits of "evolving shade of gray" are qualitatively different from those in optimal stopping or Poisson bandit models, and it is demonstrated that it may not be optimal to act immediately upon observation even if successes or failures are conclusive.
Abstract: In the standard optimal stopping problems, actions are artificially restricted to the moments of observations of costs or benefits. In the standard experimentation and learning models based on two-armed Poisson bandits, it is possible to take an action between two sequential observations. The latter models do not recognize the fact that timing of decisions depends not only on the rate of arrival of observations, but also on the stochastic dynamics of costs or benefits. We combine together these two strands of literature and consider bandits of "evolving shade of gray" instead of two-armed bandits who are either "white knights" or "black villains." Stopping decisions in a model with Poisson bandits of "evolving shade of gray" are qualitatively different from those in optimal stopping or Poisson bandit models. We demonstrate that it may not be optimal to act immediately upon observation even if successes or failures are conclusive.

TL;DR: In this article, the spectral fractional Laplacian with nonzero Dirichlet boundary conditions was shown to be the generator of an appropriate Feller semigroup for subordinate stopped Brownian motion, and a stochastic solution for the fractional heat equation in a bounded domain.
Abstract: We prove and implement stochastic solution (or Feynman-Kac) formulas for boundary value problems involving the spectral fractional Laplacian with nonzero Dirichlet boundary condition. The main tools used in the proofs are the abstract Cauchy problem for Feller semigroups together with Balakrishnan's theory of fractional powers. We show the the spectral fractional Laplacian with nonzero Dirichlet boundary conditions is the generator of an appropriate Feller semigroup for subordinate stopped Brownian motion, and obtain a stochastic solution formula for the fractional heat equation in a bounded domain. We then obtain precise regularity and steady-state convergence properties of the parabolic problem using the eigenfunction expansion of the classical solution, which leads to estimates for the survival probability of subordinate stopped Brownian motion. These results allow us to take the long-time limit in the parabolic formula to establish a stochastic solution formula for the Dirichlet boundary value problem. These stochastic solution formulas for the spectral fractional Laplacian with nonzero boundary conditions are novel, and allow for efficient, embarrassingly parallel local solution of the above boundary value problems. We discuss the discretization of these formulas, and verify them in dimensions two and three with benchmark examples. We study the effect of the number of path samples and the time step size for path discretization on the accuracy of the solution.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the transition density and exponential ergodicity in total variation for an affine process on the canonical state space under a Hormander-type condition for diffusion components as well as a boundary non-attainment assumption.
Abstract: In this paper we study the transition density and exponential ergodicity in total variation for an affine process on the canonical state space $\mathbb{R}_{\geq0}^{m}\times\mathbb{R}^{n}$ Under a Hormander-type condition for diffusion components as well as a boundary non-attainment assumption, we derive the existence and regularity of the transition density for the affine process and then prove the strong Feller property Moreover, we also show that under these and the additional subcritical conditions the corresponding affine process on the canonical state space is exponentially ergodic in the total variation distance To prove existence and regularity of the transition density we derive some precise estimates for the real part of the characteristic function of the process Our ergodicity result is a consequence of a suitable application of a Harris-type theorem based on a local Dobrushin condition combined with the regularity of the transition densities
