Abstract: This article reviews several definitions of the fractional Laplace operator (-Delta)^{alpha/2} (0 < alpha < 2) in R^d, also known as the Riesz fractional derivative operator, as an operator on Lebesgue spaces L^p, on the space C_0 of continuous functions vanishing at infinity and on the space C_{bu} of bounded uniformly continuous functions. Among these definitions are ones involving singular integrals, semigroups of operators, Bochner's subordination and harmonic extensions. We collect and extend known results in order to prove that all these definitions agree: on each of the function spaces considered, the corresponding operators have common domain and they coincide on that common domain.

Abstract: Consider a model of a financial market with a stock driven by a Levy process and constant interest rate. A closed formula for prices of perpetual American call options in terms of the overall supremum of the Levy process, and a corresponding closed formula for perpetual American put options involving the infimum of the after-mentioned process are obtained. As a direct application of the previous results, a Black-Scholes type formula is given. Also as a consequence, simple explicit formulas for prices of call options are obtained for a Levy process with positive mixed-exponential and arbitrary negative jumps. In the case of put options, similar simple formulas are obtained under the condition of negative mixed-exponential and arbitrary positive jumps. Risk-neutral valuation is discussed and a simple jump-diffusion model is chosen to illustrate the results.

Abstract: We review work on extreme events, their causes and consequences, by a group of European and American researchers involved in a three-year project on these topics. The review covers theoretical aspects of time series analysis and of extreme value theory, as well as of the deterministic modeling of extreme events, via continuous and discrete dynamic models. The applications include climatic, seismic and socio-economic events, along with their prediction. Two important results refer to (i) the complementarity of spectral analysis of a time series in terms of the continuous and the discrete part of its power spectrum; and (ii) the need for coupled modeling of natural and socio-economic systems. Both these results have implications for the study and prediction of natural hazards and their human impacts.

Abstract: We study the behavior of the critical price of an American put option near maturity in an exponential Levy model. In particular, we prove that in situations where the limit of the critical price is equal to the strike price, the rate of convergence to the limit is linear if and only if the underlying Levy process has finite variation. In the case of infinite variation, a variety of rates of convergence can be observed: we prove that when the negative part of the Levy measure exhibits an α-stable density near the origin, with 1<α<2, the convergence rate is ruled by $\theta^{1/\alpha}|\ln \theta|^{1-\frac{1}{\alpha}}$ , where θ is the time until maturity.

Abstract: We use Levy subordinators and non-Gaussian Ornstein–Uhlenbeck processes to model the evolution of degradation with random jumps. The superiority of our models stems from the flexibility of such processes in the modeling of stylized features of degradation data series such as jumps, linearity/nonlinearity, symmetry/asymmetry, and light/heavy tails. Based on corresponding Fokker–Planck equations, we derive explicit results for the reliability function and lifetime moments in terms of Laplace transforms, represented by Levy measures. Numerical experiments are used to demonstrate that our general models perform well and are applicable for analyzing a large number of degradation phenomena. More important, they provide us with a new methodology to deal with multi-degradation processes under dynamicenvironments.

Abstract: We present a multivariate stochastic volatility model with leverage, which is flexible enough to recapture the individual dynamics as well as the interdependencies between several assets while still being highly analytically tractable. First we derive the characteristic function and give conditions that ensure its analyticity and absolute integrability in some open complex strip around zero. Therefore we can use Fourier methods to compute the prices of multi-asset options efficiently. To show the applicability of our results, we propose a concrete specification, the OU-Wishart model, where the dynamics of each individual asset coincide with the popular Gamma-OU BNS model. This model can be well calibrated to market prices, which we illustrate with an example using options on the exchange rates of some major currencies. Finally, we show that covariance swaps can also be priced in closed form.

Abstract: We study the ergodic properties of a class of multidimensional piecewise Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes with jumps, which contains the limit of the queueing processes arising in multiclass many-server queues with heavy-tailed arrivals and/or asymptotically negligible service interruptions in the Halfin-Whitt regime as special cases. In these queueing models, the Ito equations have a piecewise linear drift, and are driven by either (1) a Brownian motion and a pure-jump Levy process, or (2) an anisotropic Levy process with independent one-dimensional symmetric $\alpha$-stable components, or (3) an anisotropic Levy process as in (2) and a pure-jump Levy process. We also study the class of models driven by a subordinate Brownian motion, which contains an isotropic (or rotationally invariant) $\alpha$-stable Levy process as a special case. We identify conditions on the parameters in the drift, the Levy measure and/or covariance function which result in subexponential and/or exponential ergodicity. We show that these assumptions are sharp, and we identify some key necessary conditions for the process to be ergodic. In addition, we show that for the queueing models described above with no abandonment, the rate of convergence is polynomial, and we provide a sharp quantitative characterization of the rate via matching upper and lower bounds.
