Examination of the sources and mechanisms of the secretion of BNP in comparison with those of ANP in control subjects and in patients with heart failure concludes that BNP is secreted mainly from the left ventricle in normal adult humans as well as in Patients with left ventricular dysfunction.
Abstract
BACKGROUNDB-type or brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) is a novel natriuretic peptide secreted from the heart that forms a peptide family with A-type or atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), and its plasma level has been shown to be increased in patients with congestive heart failure. This study was designed to examine the sources and mechanisms of the secretion of BNP in comparison with those of ANP in control subjects and in patients with heart failure.METHODS AND RESULTSWe measured the plasma levels of BNP as well as ANP in 16 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (11 men and 5 women; mean age, 59 years) and 18 control subjects (9 men and 9 women; mean age, 54 years) by sampling blood from the femoral vein, the aortic root, the anterior interventricular vein (AIV), and the coronary sinus using the newly developed immunoradiometric assay systems. In the control subjects, there was no significant difference in the plasma ANP level between the aortic root and the AIV (24.0 +/- 5.2 pg/mL versus 32.2 +/- 17.0 pg/mL...

Treatment of heart failure guided by plasma aminoterminal brain natriuretic peptide (N-BNP) concentrations.

TL;DR: N-BNP-guided treatment of heart failure reduced total cardiovascular events, delayed time to first event compared with intensive clinically guided treatment, and changed left-ventricular function, quality of life, renal function, and adverse events were similar in both groups.

The prognostic value of B-type natriuretic peptide in patients with acute coronary syndromes.

TL;DR: A single measurement of B-type natriuretic peptide, obtained in the first few days after the onset of ischemic symptoms, provides powerful information for use in risk stratification across the spectrum of acute coronary syndromes, and suggests that cardiac neurohormonal activation may be a unifying feature among patients at high risk for death after acute coronary syndrome.

A new natriuretic peptide in porcine brain

TL;DR: The brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) as mentioned in this paper was identified in porcine brain of a novel peptide of 26 amino acid residues, eliciting a pharmacological spectrum very similar to that of ANP.

Brain natriuretic peptide as a novel cardiac hormone in humans. Evidence for an exquisite dual natriuretic peptide system, atrial natriuretic peptide and brain natriuretic peptide.

TL;DR: Results indicate that BNP is a novel cardiac hormone secreted predominantly from the ventricle, and that the synthesis, secretion and clearance of BNP differ from those of ANP, suggesting discrete physiological and pathophysiological roles of HBNP in a dual natriuretic peptide system.

Atrial Natriuretic Peptide Elevation in Congestive Heart Failure in the Human
