Locating the 17th Book of Giddens@@@The Constitution of Society: Outline of the Theory of Structuration.

01 May 1986-Contemporary Sociology-Vol. 15, Iss: 3, pp 344
TL;DR: Giddens as mentioned in this paper has been in the forefront of developments in social theory for the past decade and outlines the distinctive position he has evolved during that period and offers a full statement of a major new perspective in social thought, a synthesis and elaboration of ideas touched on in previous works but described here for the first time in an integrated and comprehensive form.
Abstract: Anthony Giddens has been in the forefront of developments in social theory for the past decade. In "The Constitution of Society" he outlines the distinctive position he has evolved during that period and offers a full statement of a major new perspective in social thought, a synthesis and elaboration of ideas touched on in previous works but described here for the first time in an integrated and comprehensive form. A particular feature is Giddens' concern to connect abstract problems of theory to an interpretation of the nature of empirical method in the social sciences. In presenting his own ideas, Giddens mounts a critical attack on some of the more orthodox sociological views. "The Constitution of Society" is an invaluable reference book for all those concerned with the basic issues in contemporary social theory.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors suggest a socospatial isolation index that is studied for individual agents in respect to the spaces in which they actually conduct their everyday life, leading to the aggregation of individuals who share the same orientation toward segregation.
Abstract: This article suggests that common segregation indices be complemented by an additional index that emphasizes an agent’s isolation from members of other groups in everyday life. We suggest a “sociospatial isolation” index that is studied for individual agents in respect to the spaces in which they actually conduct their everyday life, leading to the aggregation of individuals who share the same orientation toward segregation. The index refers to both the territorial and the interactive contexts of seven aspects: home vicinity, cluster of neighboring homes, neighborhood and city in the territorial context, and friends, work, and leisure activities in the interactive context of an agent’s everyday life activity spaces. The article calculates some hypothetical examples that demonstrate the qualities of the index and is followed by the case of African migrant workers and their segregation in one neighborhood of the inner city of Tel Aviv. The index may receive values between 0–1, with the value of 0.5 represen...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors extend the discussion of the recursive relationship between the identity of a profession and the professional identity of individuals in the context of change and suggest that individual professionals use and rewrite scripts of their profession but also draw upon new scripts as they engage with local change.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to extend the discussion of the recursive relationship between the identity of a profession and the professional identity of individuals in the context of change.Design/methodology/approach – The paper draws on qualitative data collected as part of a pilot study into change in the NHS. It draws on structuration theory and insights from social identity theory (SIT) to propose that the relationship between the collective level of the profession and the individual level of the professional is recursive.Findings – The data suggest that individual professionals use and rewrite scripts of their profession but also draw upon new scripts as they engage with local change. To that extent they contribute from the local level upwards to the changing identity of their profession. Further more detailed micro level studies are required.Research limitations/implications – The argument is based on a limited data set and points towards the need for further microlevel studies which exa...

TL;DR: This paper analyzes knowledge production in design-science research to explain how an endogenous form of pluralism characterizes such studies, making it problematic to associate any design- science study with a single view of knowledge production.
Abstract: Recognizing that design is at the core of information systems development has led to a design-science research paradigm where differing kinds of knowledge goals give form to differing kinds of knowledge processes within a single study This paper analyzes knowledge production in design-science research to explain how an endogenous form of pluralism characterizes such studies, making it problematic to associate any design-science study with a single view of knowledge production Instead, a design-science research study exhibits up to four different modes of reasoning, called genres of inquiry These genres are derived from two dualities that contrast differing knowledge goals and differing knowledge scope in the knowledge production process The first duality arises from the sometimes seemingly contradictory knowledge goals of science versus design The second duality reflects the contradiction between the scope of the knowledge produced, which may be idiographic or nomothetic The evolutionary and iterative nature of a design-science study compels different knowledge goals and scope at different moments throughout a project Because of this momentary nature, a single design-science study can be associated with multiple genres of inquiry This understanding of the variety in the genres of inquiry advances the discourse on the nature of design-science research and the justification and evaluation of its outcomes Consequently, a corresponding set of criteria for knowledge justification and evaluation is provided for each genre of inquiry

TL;DR: In this article, the authors assess the recent trend of rule-making by private multi-stakeholder initiatives by analysing the multiple functions and impacts of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
Abstract: This article assesses the recent trend of rule-making by private multi-stakeholder initiatives – a hitherto largely unnoticed phenomenon in global environmental governance – by analysing the multiple functions and impacts of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), one of the best-known private institutions in global environmental politics. After clarifying the general context of private governance, I turn to the specific function of private rule-making institutions. I argue that rule-making can be understood as the act of agreeing on both constitutive and regulative rules that prescribe the behaviour of a specific group of actors, whether individuals or organisations. Further, I argue that the FSC, as one example of private rule-making in world politics, performs three additional functions that shape the contours of global governance: (1) facilitating a solution to complex multi-interest problems, (2) brokering knowledge and norms among a wide range of stakeholders, and (3) constituting a learning network in environmental governance.
