Locating the 17th Book of Giddens@@@The Constitution of Society: Outline of the Theory of Structuration.

TL;DR: Giddens as mentioned in this paper has been in the forefront of developments in social theory for the past decade and outlines the distinctive position he has evolved during that period and offers a full statement of a major new perspective in social thought, a synthesis and elaboration of ideas touched on in previous works but described here for the first time in an integrated and comprehensive form.
Abstract: Anthony Giddens has been in the forefront of developments in social theory for the past decade. In "The Constitution of Society" he outlines the distinctive position he has evolved during that period and offers a full statement of a major new perspective in social thought, a synthesis and elaboration of ideas touched on in previous works but described here for the first time in an integrated and comprehensive form. A particular feature is Giddens' concern to connect abstract problems of theory to an interpretation of the nature of empirical method in the social sciences. In presenting his own ideas, Giddens mounts a critical attack on some of the more orthodox sociological views. "The Constitution of Society" is an invaluable reference book for all those concerned with the basic issues in contemporary social theory.

TL;DR: Rose, Jones and Truex (2005) offer a valuable discussion of the issue that has occupied center stage in IS research for decades: how to conceptualize the relationship between technology and organizations.
Abstract: Rose, Jones and Truex (2005) offer a valuable discussion of the issue that has occupied center stage in IS research for decades: how to conceptualize the relationship between technology and organizations? They raise a number of important concerns with existing approaches to this issue, and by highlighting these limitations, Rose, Jones and Truex challenge us to rethink our cherished assumptions and conventional approaches to studying information systems (IS) phenomena. The question of the relationship between technology and organizations is a fundamental one in the IS literature, and goes to the heart of how we think about, study, and develop information technologies. Whether explicitly addressed by IS researchers in their work, or not, all IS studies reflect a particular position on this question (Orlikowski and Iacono 2001). And that position has tended to swing, like a pendulum throughout the history of IS research (Kling and Scaachi, 1982; Markus and Robey 1988), from those privileging the technology (technological determinism, discrete-entity tool view, autonomous technology), to those favoring the social (strategic choice view, web-based ensemble models), and then onto more middle-ground approaches as reflected in socio-technical and emergent perspectives.

TL;DR: The article analyses the interrelationship of users of mobile devices with the structures, agency and practices of, and in relation to what the authors call the "mobile complex".
Abstract: This article proposes appropriation as the key for the recognition of mobile devices-as well as the artefacts accessed through, and produced with them-as cultural resources across different cultural practices of use, in everyday life and formal education. The article analyses the interrelationship of users of mobile devices with the structures, agency and practices of, and in relation to what the authors call the "mobile complex". Two examples are presented and some curricular options for the assimilation of mobile devices into settings of formal learning are discussed. Also, a typology of appropriation is presented that serves as an explanatory, analytical frame and starting point for a discussion about attendant issues.

TL;DR: African cities have long been characterised by the presence of an ‘informal sector’ but are now experiencing new waves of ‘infinite Informalization’, according to a report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) at King's College London.
Abstract: Trends towards ‘informalization’ are looming large in the world today. African cities have long been characterised by the presence of an ‘informal sector’ but are now experiencing new waves of ‘inf ...

TL;DR: This paper defined race, racism, institutional racism, and racialization, and provided examples of how these function in fields like the natural sciences and asylum seeking, and set out theoretical arguments around collective identities ('race', class, gender, nation, religion').
Abstract: We hear much about 'race' and 'racism' in public discourse, but these terms are frequently used without clear definitions or practical examples of how these phenomena actually work. Racisms introduces practical methods which enable students to think coherently and sociologically about this complex feature of the global landscape. This text: - Defines 'race', 'racism' 'instiutional racism' and 'racialization' - Provides examples of how these function in fields like the natural sciences and asylum seeking - Clearly sets out theoretical arguments around collective identities ('race', class, gender, nation, religion) - Uses empirical case studies, including some drawn from the author's own fieldwork - Points students and other readers toward sources of further web and text-based information.

TL;DR: Adaptive Structuration Theory (AST) as mentioned in this paper is a meta-theory for examining information systems within an organizational context, and it has been used in a variety of applications.
Abstract: Information systems (IS) research often attempts to examine and explain how technology leads to outcomes through usage of IS. Although extensive research in this area has resulted in a significant number of theories, limited work has been done on integrating these theories. This paper presents adaptive structuration theory (AST) as a meta-theory for examining IS within an organizational context. The two main contributions of the paper are an understanding of meta-theory's role in IS and building a case for using AST as a meta-theory to (1) provide an overarching perspective for understanding and integrating existing literature and theories, (2) provide a template and set of guidelines for creating better context-specific IS models and theories, and (3) provide a deeper understanding of a theory. Along with discussion of the contributions, we provide examples to guide researchers in applying AST as a meta-theory.
