Locating the 17th Book of Giddens@@@The Constitution of Society: Outline of the Theory of Structuration.

01 May 1986-Contemporary Sociology-Vol. 15, Iss: 3, pp 344
TL;DR: Giddens as mentioned in this paper has been in the forefront of developments in social theory for the past decade and outlines the distinctive position he has evolved during that period and offers a full statement of a major new perspective in social thought, a synthesis and elaboration of ideas touched on in previous works but described here for the first time in an integrated and comprehensive form.
Abstract: Anthony Giddens has been in the forefront of developments in social theory for the past decade. In "The Constitution of Society" he outlines the distinctive position he has evolved during that period and offers a full statement of a major new perspective in social thought, a synthesis and elaboration of ideas touched on in previous works but described here for the first time in an integrated and comprehensive form. A particular feature is Giddens' concern to connect abstract problems of theory to an interpretation of the nature of empirical method in the social sciences. In presenting his own ideas, Giddens mounts a critical attack on some of the more orthodox sociological views. "The Constitution of Society" is an invaluable reference book for all those concerned with the basic issues in contemporary social theory.

TL;DR: Team sport activities seem to be intrinsically motivating to the participants through positive social interaction and play and are therefore more likely to result in exercise continuation than activities that rely primarily on extrinsic motivation such as the expectation of improved health and well‐being.
Abstract: The aim of this study was to explore how and why participants in structured exercise intervention programs continue or stop exercising after the program is finished. We conducted four focus group interviews with four groups of middle-aged and elderly men (total n = 28) who had participated in exercise interventions involving playing either a team sport (football) or a more individually focused activity (spinning and crossfit). Our results show that different social, organizational and material structures inherent in the different activities shape the subjects' enjoyment of exercise participation, as well as their intention and ability to continue being active. In conclusion, team sport activities seem to be intrinsically motivating to the participants through positive social interaction and play. They are therefore more likely to result in exercise continuation than activities that rely primarily on extrinsic motivation such as the expectation of improved health and well-being.

TL;DR: In this article, the role of social influence in transitioning toward new low-carbon products and practices is examined and five research perspectives of how social interactions affect the spread of new behaviors through social networks: diffusion of functional information across social groups, conformity to others' behaviors, dissemination by organized, resourceful social groups motivated to promote societal goods, translation of consumers' perceptions between social groups; and reflexivity of individuals' continual search for self-development and expression through lifestyle practices.
Abstract: Realizing a low-carbon energy future requires pervasive changes in consumer behavior. Here, we examine the role of social influence in transitioning toward new low-carbon products and practices. We review and critique five research perspectives of how social interactions affect the spread of new behaviors through social networks: diffusion of functional information across social groups; conformity to others' behaviors; dissemination by organized, resourceful social groups motivated to promote societal goods; translation of consumers' perceptions between social groups; and reflexivity of individuals' continual search for self-development and expression through lifestyle practices, including their social context and consumption. Each perspective observes different social processes and holds different implications for policies and strategies to achieve low-carbon energy transitions. No single perspective seems adequate to characterize social influence. We conclude with a set of priorities to develop an integ...

TL;DR: This article reviewed the sociology of accounting and calculative practice that has been established outside academic sociology by accounting scholars and found that calculative practices contribute to the maintenance of social order while associating the financial with the non-financial, the real with the hyperreal, the conventional with the creative, indicating considerable tensions inherent in the social fabric of calculating cultures, and upholding a suspense of calculation inspiring further sociological investigation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the importance of time to social relationships of care, and review existing attempts to integrate time with space in geographical research, and suggest that exploring the time-space links between the processes producing policies and services and those affecting individual behaviours is a promising avenue for future research.
Abstract: This paper is concerned with the geographical analysis of care relationships. It argues that concern with space needs to be augmented by a more explicit attention to the importance of time to caring. The paper discusses the importance of time to social relationships of care, and reviews existing attempts to integrate time with space in geographical research. The paper reflects on and extends the ‘caringscapes/carescapes’ framework for research on informal care proposed in a recent book and earlier publications by myself and colleagues. It suggests that exploring the time—space links between the processes producing policies and services and those affecting individual behaviours is a promising avenue for future research.
