Long-term shifts in anthropogenic subsidies to gulls and implications for an imperiled fish

TLDR
Although steelhead contribute relatively less to overall modern gull diet, increasing gull populations and simultaneous steelhead population decline likely results in increased per capita predation risk to modern steelhead populations—the best estimate is that modern predationrisk is ~ 2.4 times higher than historically, but this estimate depends on parameter values and overlaps with zero.

The Effects of Food Waste on Wildlife and Humans

TL;DR: In this article, the authors highlight the extent of such impacts, drawing on examples from mammalian predators and other taxonomic groups, and show how wildlife access to food waste can exacerbate human-wildlife conflicts.
Journal ArticleDOI

Shifting individual habitat specialization of a successful predator living in anthropogenic landscapes

TL;DR: Investigating the spatial ecology of the opportunistic yellow-legged gull Larus michahellis found that the combination of individual specialization and individual spatial segregation may reduce intra-specific competition, with these 2 important mechanisms driving the success of this winning species.
Journal ArticleDOI

Feathered Detectives: real-time GPS tracking of scavenging gulls pinpoints illegal waste dumping

TL;DR: The potential of novel real-time GPS tracking of scavenging species to detect environmental crime is demonstrated and multi-species guilds of feathered detectives equipped with GPS and cameras could help fight illegal dumping at continental scales.

Inference from Iterative Simulation Using Multiple Sequences

TL;DR: The focus is on applied inference for Bayesian posterior distributions in real problems, which often tend toward normal- ity after transformations and marginalization, and the results are derived as normal-theory approximations to exact Bayesian inference, conditional on the observed simulations.

Fishing Down Marine Food Webs

TL;DR: The mean trophic level of the species groups reported in Food and Agricultural Organization global fisheries statistics declined from 1950 to 1994, and results indicate that present exploitation patterns are unsustainable.

Catastrophes, phase shifts, and large-scale degradation of a Caribbean coral reef.

TL;DR: A dramatic phase shift has occurred in Jamaica, producing a system dominated by fleshy macroalgae (more than 90 percent cover), and immediate implementation of management procedures is necessary to avoid further catastrophic damage.
