Abstract: The importance of signs and symbols has been widely recognized, but only a handful of consumer researchers have developed theory and research programs based on semiotics, the doctrine of signs. This article outlines the emergence and principal perspectives of semiotics and then discusses its applications and implications for consumer research. Among its strengths, semiotics positions meaning at the nucleus of consumer behavior, provides a rich metalanguage for semiotic consumer research, and recommends a multi-paradigm philosophy of science.

Abstract: This chapter analyses the emergence of ethnomathematics as a field of research. It starts with the work of some isolated forerunners like Wilder and Raum, and moves to D’Ambrosio’s ethnomathematical research program, and the simultaneous gestation of other concepts, like indigenous, socio-, informal, spontaneous, oral, hidden, implicit, and people's mathematics. It compares various conceptualisations and paradigms of ethnomathematics. The influence of Freire's ideas on a series of scholars working in the field of ethnomathematics is stressed . The second part of the chapter presents an overview of ethnomathematical literature, continent by continent. The third and final part discusses some ofthe basic assumptions associated with the use of ideas from ethnomathematics in education. Some complementary and partially overlapping trends in educational experimentation are considered from an ethnomathematical perspective.

Abstract: In the mid eighties, mathematics educators propagating the teaching of mathematics by applications represented a small and unique group. Emphasizing the value of necessity of applications in mathematics education was judged as theoretical and practical action against the dominance of pure mathematics in schools raised by the new math movement. At present, in 1996, this ‘movement’ towards more applications has gained quite some momentum (Keitel 1993). The aim of this chapter is to establish a reasonably accurate picture of the debate and actual state of using and applying mathematics in schools.
