MATPOWER: Steady-State Operations, Planning, and Analysis Tools for Power Systems Research and Education

TL;DR: The details of the network modeling and problem formulations used by MATPOWER, including its extensible OPF architecture, are presented, which are used internally to implement several extensions to the standard OPF problem, including piece-wise linear cost functions, dispatchable loads, generator capability curves, and branch angle difference limits.
Abstract: MATPOWER is an open-source Matlab-based power system simulation package that provides a high-level set of power flow, optimal power flow (OPF), and other tools targeted toward researchers, educators, and students. The OPF architecture is designed to be extensible, making it easy to add user-defined variables, costs, and constraints to the standard OPF problem. This paper presents the details of the network modeling and problem formulations used by MATPOWER, including its extensible OPF architecture. This structure is used internally to implement several extensions to the standard OPF problem, including piece-wise linear cost functions, dispatchable loads, generator capability curves, and branch angle difference limits. Simulation results are presented for a number of test cases comparing the performance of several available OPF solvers and demonstrating MATPOWER's ability to solve large-scale AC and DC OPF problems.

TL;DR: In this article, a greedy algorithm is developed to solve the problem of identifying the most vulnerable phasor measurement units in the network and a computationally efficient alternating minimization algorithm for joint state estimation and attack reconstruction is presented.
Abstract: Sensors such as phasor measurement units (PMUs) endowed with GPS receivers are ubiquitously installed providing real-time grid visibility. A number of PMUs can cooperatively enable state estimation routines. However, GPS spoofing attacks can notably alter the PMU measurements, mislead the network operator, and drastically impact subsequent corrective control actions. Leveraging a novel measurement model that explicitly accounts for the GPS spoofing attacks, this paper formulates an optimization problem to identify the most vulnerable PMUs in the network. A greedy algorithm is developed to solve the aforementioned problem. Furthermore, the paper develops a computationally efficient alternating minimization algorithm for joint state estimation and attack reconstruction. Numerical tests on IEEE benchmark networks validate the developed methods.

TL;DR: An alternative to solve the distribution network reconfiguration (DNR) problem, aiming real power losses’ minimization, is proposed, based on the firefly metaheuristic, named selective firefly algorithm, where the positioning of these insects is compressed in a selective range of values.
Abstract: This paper proposes an alternative to solve the distribution network reconfiguration (DNR) problem, aiming real power losses' minimization. For being a problem that has complexity for its solution, approximate techniques are adequate for solving it. Here, the proposition is a technique based on the firefly metaheuristic, named selective firefly algorithm, where the positioning of these insects is compressed in a selective range of values. The algorithm is applied to the DNR, and all its implementation and adequacy to the problem studied are presented. To define the search space, the methodology presented initially considers a set of candidate switches for opening based on the studied systems' mesh analysis. To reduce these possibilities, a refinement through a load flow analysis criterion (LFAC) is proposed. This LFAC considers the real power losses on each branch for a configuration with all switches closed, then, selecting possible switches to elimination from the set previously established. To demonstrate the behavior and the viability of the LFAC, it was initially applied on a 5 buses' and 7 branches' system. Also, to avoid getting stuck on results that may be considered not good, a disturbance resetting the population is set to occur every time a counter reaches a pre-defined number of times that the best solution does not change. Results found for simulations with 33, 70, and 84 buses are presented and comparisons with selective particle swarm optimization (SPSO) and selective bat algorithm (SBAT) are made.

TL;DR: An equivalent mixed-integer program based on primal-dual optimality condition and integer algebra technique is developed which accelerates computation remarkably and can reshape the load profile by shaving the peaking and filling the valley without harming the profit of the company.
Abstract: Electric vehicles (EVs) has tiny environmental impact and will constitute a major mean of urban transportation in the future. Shared EV is quickly becoming a new business model under the sharing economy initiatives, providing easy access for commuters who possess no private cars. In this paper, we consider a carsharing company that owns EVs and some parking lots. Passengers can hire an EV at one parking lot and drive it to another one and pay for the service at a certain price determined by the company. A dedicated EV mobility model is proposed to capture the spatial transportation of energy without tracking every single vehicle. Price elasticity is described by a linear demand-price function. The company schedules the aggregated charging of unoccupied EVs in each parking lot, aiming at maximizing the total profit. Parking lots possess relatively large capacity and have to participate in a distribution power market; energy consumption is paid at the locational marginal price. The decision-making problem of the company is formulated as a bilevel program. The lower level simulates the distribution market clearing, and the upper level represents the pricing and charging scheduling problem faced by the company. Starting from a global polyhedral approximation of the power flow model, we develop an equivalent mixed-integer program based on primal-dual optimality condition and integer algebra technique, together with a warm-start strategy which accelerates computation remarkably. Case studies demonstrate that the proposed business model can reshape the load profile by shaving the peaking and filling the valley without harming the profit of the company.

TL;DR: A stochastic optimization framework for integrated condition-based maintenance and operations scheduling for a fleet of generators with explicit consideration of unexpected failures with a deterministic safe approximation of the difficult chance constraint is developed.
Abstract: We develop a stochastic optimization framework for integrated condition-based maintenance and operations scheduling for a fleet of generators with explicit consideration of unexpected failures. Our approach is based on a model that uses condition-based failure scenarios derived from the remaining lifetime distributions of the generators, as well as a chance constraint to ensure a reliable maintenance plan. We derive a deterministic safe approximation of the difficult chance constraint. The large number of failure scenarios is handled by a combination of sample average approximation and an enhanced scenario decomposition algorithm in a distributed framework. We introduce a number of algorithmic improvements by exploiting the polyhedral structure of the problem, utilizing its time decomposability, and an analysis of the transmission line capacities. Finally, we present a case study demonstrating the significant cost savings and computational benefits of the proposed framework.

Abstract: In this paper a procedure to detect and isolate data attacks on power network power flow measurements is proposed. This method can be used in conjunction with available bad data detection (BDD) methods to isolate multiple bad data which are otherwise difficult to handle. The proposed procedure relies on secure measurements of bus voltage magnitudes to define a measurement residual using potentially compromised active and reactive power flow measurements on transmission lines. The proposed residual can be calculated in real-time. In addition, the component of the proposed residual on any particular line depends only locally on the component of the data attack on the same line. This makes the proposed residual well-suited for distributed data attack isolation in large-scale power networks. Furthermore, it can be shown that the proposed procedure becomes more effective when measurements from multiple time instances can be utilized. A detailed numerical case study on the IEEE 14-bus benchmark system demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed procedure.

Abstract: This paper describes a simple, very reliable and extremely fast load-flow solution method with a wide range of practical application. It is attractive for accurate or approximate off-and on-line routine and contingency calculations for networks of any size, and can be implemented efficiently on computers with restrictive core-store capacities. The method is a development on other recent work employing the MW-?/ MVAR-V decoupling principle, and its precise algorithmic form has been determined by extensive numerical studies. The paper gives details of the method's performance on a series of practical problems of up to 1080 buses. A solution to within 0.01 MW/MVAR maximum bus mismatches is normally obtained in 4 to 7 iterations, each iteration being equal in speed to 1? Gauss-Seidel iterations or 1/5th of a Newton iteration. Correlations of general interest between the power-mismatch convergence criterion and actual solution accuracy are obtained.

Abstract: The ac power flow problem can be solved efficiently by Newton's method. Only five iterations, each equivalent to about seven of the widely used Gauss-Seidel method, are required for an exact solution. Problem dependent memory and time requirements vary approximately in direct proportion to problem size. Problems of 500 to 1000 nodes can be solved on computers with 32K core memory. The method, introduced in 1961, has been made practical by optimally ordered Gaussian elimination and special programming techniques. Equations, programming details, and examples of solutions of large problems are given.
