Measurement of occupational mobility using semi-Markov models

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed some new measures of occupational mobility in terms of serai-Markov processes and their values have been studied in the three extreme situations of interest.
Abstract: As proposed by Bartholomew (1967), occupational mobility should better be represented by semi-Markov processes. In the present paper attempts have been made to develop some new measures of occupational mobility in terms of serai-Markov processes and their values have been studied in the three extreme situations of interest.

TL;DR: Ideas of occupational mobility of Burdwan and Durgapur town of West Bengal, India through different mobility measures based on survey data are got.
Abstract: Occupational mobility is a key characteristic of social mob ility of a region. We can get an idea of intergenerational and intragenerational occupational mobility situation of a to wn. In this paper, we can get ideas of occupational mobility s ituation of Burdwan and Durgapur town of West Bengal, India through different oc cupational mobility measures based on survey data.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the intergenerational occupational mobility of the Bodo tribal people of Udalguri district under Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) of Assam, with the help of Markov chain approach.
Abstract: Occupation, income, education, status, gender, race, environment, culture etc are some of the determinants that help us to know the potential social mobility of a group of people. Among these occupation plays a vital role in determining social mobility. The present paper attempts to examine the intergenerational occupational mobility of the Bodo tribal people of Udalguri district under Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) of Assam, with the help of Markov chain approach. The study of occupational mobility of these people has become immensely important as the newly formed autonomous district (BTAD) opened up new offices as well as new opportunities that have brought changes to the lives of the people. Again only a few studies have been carried out so far of these people living in this area. The findings from analyzing a set of primary data with the help of Markov Chain approach reveal that the occupational mobility of the Tribal community in Udalguri district in general has undergone a great change and there are reasons to believe that it occurs due to the formation of BTAD, which is supposed to fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the Bodo tribal people.

TL;DR: In this article, a new measure of occupational mobility based on the distribution of wages is proposed, which can be used to study the pattern of mobility during the service life of employees.
Abstract: Mobility models are very useful in explaining the movements of people over socio-economic and job categories. Occupational mobility deals with the movements of individuals over job categories during their employment periods. Since the time interval between successive job changes is a random variable, difierent occupational mobility models have been developed by scientists using modifled Markov and semiMarkov processes. This phenomenon can be modelled by considering the underlying factors such as job satisfaction, salary, distance of the work place, family requirements and others. Unlike most of the previous works in this area, the present study suggests a new measure of occupational mobility based on the distribution of wages. Here a general occupational mobility model has been developed to study the pattern of mobility during the service life of employees. First the probability distribution of the number of job changes in the entire employment life of individuals has been obtained considering the inter-job ofier times (within an interval) and the associated wages as random variables. Then a measure of occupational mobility based on this distribution has been developed. The results are obtained under both frequentist and Bayesian frameworks. As an application of the proposed model the results in this paper have been illustrated by using data from a recent survey among the stafi members of the University of Southern Queensland, Australia.

TL;DR: The framework derives from a general stochastic model of the histories in which moves depend on the past history of the process, time varying individual characteristics, and exogenous constraints and opportunities, and the semi-Markov model plays a distinguished role.

Abstract: The importance of studying the relationship between the timing of moves and the choice of destination is discussed in terms of theories of migration decision processes and of methodological issues in the analysis of migration histories. Special attention is given to duration-of-residence effects. Statistical procedures based on the theory of competing risks and semi-Markov processes are developed and applied to residence histories of Norwegian men, 1965–1971. Subject to several qualifications, the results confirm the hypothesis that decisions of whether to move and where to go are independent. The methods can be used in many analogous problem areas where timing and multiple outcomes are of concern.

TL;DR: The fundamental assumption about the timing of moves in Markov, semi-Markov, and other renewal-theoretic models of residential mobility—that the intervals between moves are statistically independent—is tested using residence histories of Norwegian men, 1965–1971, and the evidence strongly supports the assumption.
Abstract: The fundamental assumption about the timing of moves in Markov semi-Markov and other renewal-theoretic models of residential mobility-that the intervals between moves are statistically independent-is tested using residence histories of Norwegian men 1965 - 1971. The evidence strongly supports the assumption. It is shown that given basic model parameters predictions of duration-of-residence distributions are quite accurate; and conversely duration-of-residence data can be used in conjunction with the independence assumption to estimate model parameters. The implication of these findings for the design of mobility studies is discussed and a question raised as to the necessity of gathering detailed histories. (authors)
