Abstract
We have observed a metallic solid (Al-14-at.%-Mn) with long-range orientational order, but with icosahedral point group symmetry, which is inconsistent with lattice translations. Its diffraction spots are as sharp as those of crystals but cannot be indexed to any Bravais lattice. The solid is metastable and forms from the melt by a first-order transition.

Atomic-level structure and structure–property relationship in metallic glasses

TL;DR: In this article, the authors review the tremendous efforts over the past 50 years devoted to unraveling the atomic-level structure of MGs and the structural origin of their unique behaviors.

Discrete Solitons in Optics

TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide an overview of recent experimental and theoretical developments in the area of optical discrete solitons, which represent self-trapped wavepackets in nonlinear periodic structures and result from the interplay between lattice diffraction (or dispersion) and material nonlinearity.

Crystal Nucleation in Liquids and Glasses

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on measurements and theories pertaining to homogeneous nucleation under cooled liquids and glasses that transform to phases of the same composition, and incorporate time-dependent nucleation and the interface kinetics into the field-theoretic approaches to give theories that are as widely applicable and, hence, testable as the classical theory.

A Stable Quasicrystal in Al-Cu-Fe System

TL;DR: In this article, a thermodynamically stable quasicrystalline single phase with an icosahedral structure was found to be formed at an atomic composition of Al65Cu20Fe15 in a fully annealed state as well as in a conventionally solidified state.

Bond-orientational order in liquids and glasses

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the bond-orientational order in molecular-dynamics simulations of supercooled liquids and in models of metallic glasses and found that the order is predominantly icosahedral, although there is also a cubic component which they attribute to the periodic boundary conditions.

Stability of a Planar Interface During Solidification of a Dilute Binary Alloy

TL;DR: In this article, the stability of a moving planar liquid-solid interface during unidirectional freezing of a dilute binary alloy is theoretically investigated by calculating the time dependence of the amplitude of a sinusoidal perturbation of infinitesimal amplitude introduced into the planar shape.

Complex alloy structures regarded as sphere packings. i. definitions and basic principles

TL;DR: In this paper, the topological and geometrical properties of coordination polyhedra are examined and rules and theorems regarding them are deduced, and general principles regarding the combination of these polyhedral groups into full structures are given for terms that facilitate the detailed discussion of this class of structures.

Complex alloy structures regarded as sphere packings. II. Analysis and classification of representative structures

TL;DR: In this paper, the general principles and properties which have been deduced previously (Frank & Kasper, 1958) for the class of alloy structures are applied in an analysis and classification of representative structures.
