01 Mar 2016-pp 2059-2062
TL;DR: In this paper, an experimental design technique for determining the optimum surface finish, dimensional accuracy and porosity of a part built by Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) process and mathematical modelling of the process parameters is described.
Abstract: This paper describes an experimental design technique for determining the optimum surface finish, dimensional accuracy and porosity of a part built by Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) process and mathematical modelling of the process parameters. It also explains the contribution effect of slice height, raster width, air gap, orientation and raster angle on surface roughness, dimensional accuracy and porosity. Experiments are done by Taguchi's design of experiments with two levels. The analysis is done by both ANOVA and RESPONSE SURFACE METHODOLOGY. The best and optimum process parameters found out to be is slice height of 0.1270 mm, raster width as 0.6096 mm, air gap 0 mm, orientation as 30° and raster angles as 0°.

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of different FDM fabrication parameters on the tribological behavior and wear mechanism of processed prototypes using definitive screening design and partial least squares regression was investigated, and the results demonstrate that the FDM process parameters greatly affect the wear behavior of the manufactured parts due to the various microstructural modifications during manufacturing process that cause the changes in the wear properties, which is totally accordant to practical observation.

Abstract: Rapid Prototyping and Manufacturing (RP&M) technologies have emerged for quickly creating 3D products directly from computer-aided design systems. These technologies significantly improve the present prototyping practices in industry. This paper reviews the main technologies and applications of RP&M. The principles and the features of those RP&M technologies are presented. Some existing problems and research issues on these new technologies are introduced. We also include two current research and application examples in using rapid prototyping for further illustration.

Abstract: This paper describes an experimental design technique for determining the optimum surface finish and dimensional accuracy of a part built by the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) process. The design investigates the effect of the process parameters layer thickness, road width, raster angle and air gap on the surface finish and dimensional accuracy. Experiments were conducted using Taguchi's design of experiments with three levels for each factor. The results are statistically analyzed to determine the significant factors and their interactions. From the ANOVA analysis, it was found that the layer thickness and road width affect the surface quality and part accuracy greatly. Raster angle has little effect. But air gap has more effect on dimensional accuracy and little effect on surface quality.
