The inverse association of moderate alcohol intake with the risk of myocardial infarction is confirmed and support the view that the effect is mediated, in large part, by increases in both HDL2 and HDL3.Abstract:
Background Previous studies have suggested that moderate alcohol intake exerts a protective effect against coronary heart disease. Alterations in plasma lipoprotein levels represent one plausible mechanism of this apparent protective effect. Methods We therefore examined the interrelation among alcohol consumption, plasma lipoprotein levels, and the risk of myocardial infarction in 340 patients who had had myocardial infarctions and an equal number of age- and sex-matched controls. The case patients were men or women less than 76 years of age with no history of coronary disease who were discharged from one of six hospitals in the Boston area with a diagnosis of a confirmed myocardial infarction. Alcohol consumption was estimated by means of a food-frequency questionnaire. Results We observed a significant inverse association between alcohol consumption and the risk of myocardial infarction (P for trend, <0.001 after control for known coronary risk factors). In multivariate analyses, the relative risk for ...read more

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provided evidence-based recommendations for the prevention of future stroke among survivors of ischemic stroke or transient ischemi-chemic attack, including the control of risk factors, intervention for vascular obstruction, antithrombotic therapy for cardioembolism, and antiplatelet therapy for noncardioembolic stroke.

TL;DR: For example, this article found that older age, postmenopausal status, Mexican American ethnicity, higher body mass index, current smoking, low household income, high carbohydrate intake, no alcohol consumption, and physical inactivity were associated with increased odds of metabolic syndrome.

High density lipoprotein as a protective factor against coronary heart disease: The Framingham study
TL;DR: The major potent lipid risk factor was HDL cholesterol, which had an inverse association with the incidence of coronary heart disease in either men or women and these associations were equally significant even when other lipids and other standard risk factors for coronaryHeart disease were taken into consideration.

Plasma-high-density-lipoprotein concentration and development of ischæmic heart-disease

TL;DR: The body cholesterol pool increases with decreasing plasma-high-density-lipoprotein (H.D.L.) but is unrelated to the plasma concentrations of total cholesterol and other lipoproteins, and it is proposed that a reduction of plasma-H.H.L.D., is reduced in several conditions associated with an increased risk of future ischaemic heart-disease, by impairing the clearance of cholesterol from the arterial wall.
