TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of irradiation of quasicrystalline targets with swift heavy ions have been discussed in terms of resistivity measurements (i.e., resistivity changes with increasing flux (ions/cm2) and ex-situ resistivity vs temperature measurements before and after irradiation).
Abstract: The present level of understanding of the effects of irradiation of quasicrystalline targets with swift heavy ions has been reviewed here. The results of systematic deposition of large amount of energy densities (12 keV/nm < (dE/dx)e < 40 keV/nm) in Al-Cu-Fe based system are discussed in terms of resistivity measurements (in-situ measurements of resistivity changes with increasing flux (ions/cm2) and ex-situ resistivity vs temperature measurements before and after irradiation) & standard and high-resolution X-ray diffraction measurements made before and after irradiation. The studies are aimed at understanding the changes that may occur in these alloys as a result of the relaxation of such highly excited states of matter. Also, we attempt to learn whether such changes are typical to the long-range quasicrystallinity of the system or not.

TL;DR: In this article, a metallic solid with long-range orientational order, but with icosahedral point group symmetry, which is inconsistent with lattice translations, was observed and its diffraction spots are as sharp as those of crystals but cannot be indexed to any Bravais lattice.
Abstract: We have observed a metallic solid (Al-14-at.%-Mn) with long-range orientational order, but with icosahedral point group symmetry, which is inconsistent with lattice translations. Its diffraction spots are as sharp as those of crystals but cannot be indexed to any Bravais lattice. The solid is metastable and forms from the melt by a first-order transition.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that thin films 3000 A in thickness of the icosahedral AlCuFe phase can be formed by solid state diffusion of sputtered Al, Cu, and Fe layers.
Abstract: We show that thin films 3000 A in thickness of the icosahedral AlCuFe phase can be formed by solid state diffusion of sputtered Al, Cu, and Fe layers. As for bulk materials, we propose that the icosahedral phase grows by diffusion of the Cu in the Al3Fe layer previously formed by interdiffusion of the Al and Fe layers. These films present high resistivity values comparable to those obtained in bulk samples of high structural quality.

TL;DR: The measurements show that the Fermi level in a quasicrystal lies in a deep narrow pseudogap 60 meV wide, and above an applied voltage of 50 mV a ${V}^{1/2}$ contribution to the DOS is observed in agreement with electron-electron interaction effects.
Abstract: We present the first experimental determination by tunneling spectroscopy of the density of states (DOS) close to the Fermi energy of AlCuFe quasicrystalline thin film samples. The measurements show that the Fermi level in a quasicrystal lies in a deep narrow pseudogap 60 meV wide. Above an applied voltage of 50 mV a ${V}^{1/2}$ contribution to the DOS is observed in agreement with electron-electron interaction effects.

TL;DR: In this paper, powder X-ray diffraction was used to study structural transformations resulting from phason instabilities in icosahedral Al-Cu-Fe using a projection of a distorted cubic six-dimensional lattice.
Abstract: Structural transformations resulting from phason instabilities in icosahedral Al–Cu–Fe have been studied by powder X-ray diffraction. Three approximant phases, the modulated icosahedral phase and a state with substantial phason disorder are located in the phase diagram. Diffraction scans of the transformations are modelled using a projection of a distorted cubic six-dimensional lattice.
